Back to winning ways for the First Team

The First Team were back at The College this weekend and with weather that was more like pre season than mid February meant it was a perfect day for it.

Obviously injuries have been the theme of this season so far and with Baz, Raffa, Jahi, Beanie, Ian, Sags and Spikes all unavailable new signing Tom Mawford was brought in for his debut and Chris took over GK duties with Matty Hoeppner playing in a more advanced role in midfield.

Watton have been very hit and miss this season with some chastening results punctuated with results against the top sides in the division so it remained to be seen which Watton would turn up. We had enjoyed a 5-2 win away earlier in the season but Baz kept us in that game at times despite leading 5-0 at HT!

With Al winning the toss Watton kicked off with the sun at their backs as both teams started the game at pace. The lively Bond managed to get away down the left in the opening exchanges but he was well martialled by Al and on the one occasion he did get a shot away it was dragged well wide of Chris' far post.

The Watton dugout was very animated and after a couple of tit for tat fouls the referee was forced to dismiss one of the opposition bench for something said out of turn and shortly after his came the first goal as goo play between George and Cissell saw the later lay the ball off for the onrushing Matty H and his driven shot beat the keeper and crept in off the post for 1-0.

Bond was then sent for ten minutes on the sidelines for taking his protests too far but this actually brought about Watton's best period of play in the first half with only a save down low by Chris from the lively Burton keeping the scores level. Wheeler and George both saw efforts fly wide and Aggy saw a header clear the crossbar as we went in search of more goals but on the stroke of half time Watton did restore parity.

An in swinging corner found the head of a Watton player and the ball looped into the far corner for 1-1. Straight from kick off though we were back in front as the ball was played back to Al who's perfectly flighted ball into the path of Wheeler was smashed home off the far post to put us back in the lead just before the referee blew for half time.

HT 2-1

New boy Mawford was introduced from the bench and the start to the second half was similar to the end of the first as we were immediately on the front foot as he found George who's low effort went just the wrong side of the post. Lewi saw a header from close range clear the bar as we started to apply real pressure and after more good interchange play between Mawford, George and Wheeler the latter managed to wriggle clear and finally get us some breathing room.

The Easton backline still had to be alert to deal with a couple of hopeful balls forward before Chris again saved well to his right. At the other end Rob saw a free kick well saved by the visiting keeper after Hayden was brought down before Cissell, who had been reintroduced from the bench saw his header beat the wrong footed keeper for 4-1.

The visitors heads had dropped at this point and Matty H grabbed his second of the day as he again fired home into the bottom corner from 20 yards and Lewi bagged his first of the season with a neat outside of the foot finish from Cissell's ball into the box to cap off a good display all round.

FT 6-1
