Ruthless Flint rout Ruthin
By Nigel Sheen
In a complete contrast to the previous week, Flint well and truly found their shooting boots to put Ruthin to the sword.
Mark Cadwallader led the way for the Silkmen, firing in a hat-trick inside 16 minutes, to completely shell shock the visitors. The only downside on a great team performance, was the dismissal of Jack Lewis, who was issued a straight red, shortly after Flint had gone 7-1 ahead. Lewis went head to head with a Ruthin player after committing a foul and was sent off.
The scoring began in the second minute. when Brandon Burrows floated over a corner onto the head of Cadwallader, who nodded home from 6 yards out.
On 8 minutes, fantastic harassing of a defender by Cadwallader, led to the Ruthin player sending the ball back to his keeper, Ryan Goldston. But Cadwallader continued to chase down the ball, and in the end, Goldston kicked the attempted clearance straight at the Flint player, who was rewarded for his perseverance, as it rebounded off him and into the net.
The hat-trick was completed from the penalty spot on 16 minutes, after Luke Blondel was brought down in the box as he attempted to race clear and in on goal. On 21 minutes, Blondel did manage to get clear, and produced a low shot under the keeper to make it 4-0.
Flint got their fifth with a fine passage of play just after the half hour mark. Burrows beat two men, before passing to Andy Brown, whose first time shot rifled into the net.
Ruthin, to their credit, kept plugging away, despite the goal avalanche, and grabbed a consolation goal just before the interval, when Ryan Jones slotted home for them.
Flint scored number 6 on 61 minutes, following good pressure. Brown's first attempt was originally blocked by Goldston, but he was alive to the rebound, and followed up from about 8 yards to get his second of the game.
Skipper Richie Foulkes completed the scoring on 74 minutes, when he put the Silkmen into seventh heaven, curling a free kick into the Ruthin net from 20 yards.
