LEEK CLIMB TABLE WITH VICTORY OVER HILLMEN

By Jonathan Eeles

BLUES GAIN ANOTHER VITAL AWAY WIN AT GLOSSOP

Neil Baker named an unchanged starting eleven from the team that beat Prescot on Tuesday evening, as he was hoping to make it 3 wins in just eight days against Glossop North End.

Jack Hurd was drafted in for a place on the bench as Jordan Johnson was taken ill on the day and was unable to travel.

Leek started the brighter of the two sides but another poor playing surface and a very strong wind meant the game was not pretty on the eye.

Leek gradually grew into the game and crafted a chance midway through the first half as Stevenson shot and the keeper fumbled, the hard working Bott followed up but was denied a chance as the keeper recovered.

On 26 minutes a good passing move found the industrious Stevenson on the edge of the box but was crowded out by the numerous Glossop defenders, as he turned one way and the other he created space only to have his shot strike the post with keeper flat footed.

The half ended, the little quality that had been produced had come from Leek with Danny Roberts relatively untroubled.

The second half started with Leek on top and it was Danny Trickett-Smith who broke the deadlock on 58 minutes. A ball was played over the top onto which he ran, controlling the ball on a difficult surface and slotting the ball under the advancing keeper.

Leek soon added to their lead on 61 minutes with a very similar move, another ball played over the top with Stevenson running from a deep position beating the offside trap. On this occasion he rounded the keeper taking the ball to his left and then blasting into the empty net.

With the Glossop resolve broken Leek controlled the rest of the game, seeing the remainder of the contest out relatively untroubled.

A good week for the Blues which saw them rise to 4th, on equal points with Ramsbottom but a superior goal difference.
