BLUES PASS THE LILYWHITES TEST

By

Town notched up a vital victory with a 3-1 win over fellow play-off hopefuls Mossley at Harrison Park in front of a season's best crowd of 444.

The two sides went into the game locked on the same amount of points but with Blues occupying the final play-off place on goal difference, so with just five games left after this one the outcome was crucial.

Neil Baker made two changes from the side that drew with Colwyn Bay drafting in Rio Adebisi and Niall Maguire in place of Lewis Short and Charlie Walford.

A quiet opening saw neither side create anything of note until the 17th minute when Rob Stevenson had a run on goal but his finish was wide of the target.

Tim Grice had a similar chance down the left channel four minutes later but his shot from the angle was also wide of the target.

Leek took the lead on the half hour mark, when a short corner routine saw Maguire find Billy Reeves just outside the corner of the penalty area. His low cross in deceived everyone and ended nestling in the far corner of the net.

Eight minutes later Blues went further ahead after Stevenson was crudely upended by Ben Richardson resulting in a yellow card for the Mossley left-back. Dan Trickett-Smith swung in the resulting free-kick which was flicked on by Grice and nodded home by Maguire.

Grice tweaked his hamstring just before the break and was replaced for the second half by Aaron Bott.

Blues were rocked back on their heels just four minutes into the second half when the visitors were awarded a penalty when the ball was smashed from close range at Marc Grocott and the referee rather harshly ruled it was handball.

The Lilywhites leading scorer Max Leonard duly slotted home from the spot to reduce the arrears.

However this seemed to spur Leek on and they should have been back to two goals in front just three minutes later when Trickett-Smith threaded the ball through to Bott, who was clean through on goal, but the keeper made the save with his legs.

The third goal did arrive on 66 minutes, when following a corner, Stevenson worked the ball back into the box and Jack Sanders rose highest to head home from three yards out.

Seven minutes Grocott went close from another Stevenson cross, but he just couldn't direct his header on the run under the crossbar.

Blues saw out the remainder of the game well, denying Mossley any opportunities with the penalty remaining their only attempt on target in the entire 90 minutes.

Overall an excellent win for Town who now face another play-off contender on Tuesday night with a tough game at Prescot Cables.
