New Earswick back to winning ways.

NEAB v Brotherton Bulldogs

The deflated All Blacks were looking to finally get off the mark in their Pennine League campaign after an unusually shaky start.
It took them 16 mins to get in front when good footwork and strength saw Tom Barron get over for his 3rd try of the season. Tom Holmes converting 6-0.

New Earswick then showed great determination in defence, thwarting numerous attacking sets in their half before a break by Jack Carling and intuitive kick gave New Earswick a penalty in Brotherton’s 10m area. The result was a Jack Stearman going over the whitewash with 2 Brotherton defenders with a trade mark try. Tom Holmes converting on the 35min mark to make 12-0.

Half time 12-0.

The second half kicked off and Brotherton came out with their tails up. After 8mins their efforts were rewarded, their 7 unable to make the conversion 12-4.

Then it all started to become a very as previous weekends, Brotherton became more confident and New Earswicks luck seemed to be out after a kick over the top bounced horrendously inside the in goal area leaving a Brotherton player to ground the ball. The Brotherton halfback converting. 12-10. New Earswick then offered them a soft score after failing to get out of their 20m zone, the hooker diving over to score and the halfback making the conversion. 12-16 after 61mins.

The All Blacks never lost faith and stuck to their attacking game plan, it was an individual Liam Gargan try that put the hosts back in front. Collecting his own kick to score. Tom Holmes again successful 18-16.

It would be 2 scores in 2 mins to put Brotherton to bed the first coming 3mins from time, again Liam Gargan going over after good attack build up by Jack Carling. Tom Holmes missing the first conversion to make the score 24-16. Sean Malarkey would then open his account for the All Blacks this season after a good kick through. Tom Holmes making the conversion 1min from time 30-16.

Final score 30-16.

Jack Stearman was pleased with his teams efforts however, noted “it’s the 20mins in the middle of the match where we are conceding all of our points. It has been difficult the last couple of weeks to get ball in hand at training with the weather being the way it has been. However, the lads have been working hard in the gym and their fitness has improved no end, which is evident in the way we finished the match today.”

Man of the Match:-
1. Sean Malarkey for a great game in both defence, attack.
2. Tom Holmes
3. Liam Gargan
