HIGH WYCOMBE 7 READING 12 S COUNTIES NORTH 23 03 19

A cracking full-on game of rugby resulted in just three tries but maintained interest right to the end as the home side threw everything in to overcome a 0-12 deficit. With eight minutes to go Reading were leading 12-0 and hanging on but Wycombe’s persistence told at last as a try and conversion gave them hope of a win.
They came driving back but Reading recovered and were able to take up some time while Nick Burch took a speculative long penalty attempt which was only just short. Again the home team drove back but Reading held on for a commendable win.
It was a day when both sides played with ambition, looking to keep the ball alive, driving hard with the forwards to open up opportunities. However the defence by both sides proved to be truly committed. Much of the first half saw High Wycombe with the ball and it was Reading doing the tackling. This they did well and the home side did themselves no favours with some poor decision making at crucial moments and handling mistakes under pressure.
Wycombe’s fly half, Matt Wardle, had a very good game but his colleagues wasted some good opportunities in the first half. As it happened it was Reading who scored a first half try on the half hour as the impressive flanker Gavin Egan was driven over after a line-out. Soon after, an intercept nearly led to a try for Reading’s Chris Greig but for a wayward bounce of the ball after a kick ahead.
The second half produced more end to end play but Reading gradually began to gain the upper hand. Reading went for another line-out try but lost the ball just short of the line. Their pressure brought a Wycombe scrum five metres out from the home line and the Reading scrum drove for Charlie Davies to grab the ball and touch down. Nick Burch’s conversion gave his side a 12-point lead which proved to be enough, despite the late effort from the home side.
Reading coach Ben Wills was delighted with his team’s performance, especially the defensive display which he thought was truly awesome. His man of the match was Alex Dorliac, playing out of position at full back. “His tactical play, especially towards the end, was first class in putting us on the front foot.” Much the same could be said of fly half Alex Murray-Smith, who mixed his options well. Grant Spears put in some good defence while also making some elusive runs and Stuart Borthwick showed up well on the wing.
The coaching team will also be pleased with the front row – Josh Pallett, Patrick Johnson and Josh Nicol - and a promising first start from Number 8 Rory Laing. Overall it was great teamwork which saw them through what was a tough test.
