Round 12 Review: Rebels defeat Broadview Hawks

By Phillip Wild

The Toronto Rebels easily accounted for the Broadview Hawks in a one-sided affair to close out the season.

The Rebels went into the final round of the OAFL regular season looking to cement their place at the top of the ladder. The Hawks have some talented players so the boys in black and white were prepared for a tough battle. Unfortunately their opponents were missing several starters this week and the Rebels saw some of their own don the Hawks jumper to even numbers up. A big thanks to those boys that went across.

The first quarter was a bit of slow start but the Rebels managed to get an early goal on the board through Buddy who has been in excellent form. Some sloppy play and lapses in concentration opened up the game for the Hawks who took full benefit getting a couple of goals on the board. The Rebs woke up with Bodz 2.0 in the ruck getting first hand on the footy and the boys up front kicked truly with Big Duff looking damaging early on.

¼ time scores: Rebels 6.4.40 to Hawks 2.1.13

With some firm words from Coach Bodz at the break the Rebels came out firing. The mids were running amok with Steve and Tommy doing their thing and Digga driving many kicks into the forward 50. Wizza and Aido were providing plenty across half forward and the boys kicked away to a strong half time lead.

½ time score: Rebels 14.7.91 to Hawks 3.1.19

With 2 quarters in the regular season left, Bodz put the coaches board in the blender sending several of the boys over to the Hawks. Those boys turned up the heat on the Rebels in the third quarter which saw a much tighter contest. The backline was under significant pressure but the likes of Dre, Christian and Aussie Rob doing all they could to repel the attacks. The Rebels still managed to kick a few goals to extend the lead marginally going into the final break.

¾ time scores: Rebels 18.8.116 to Hawks 6.2.38

With the game all but won, the Rebels went in to the last wanting to end on a strong note. The mids continued to battle hard with Bodz 2.0 finishing off a solid game in the Ruck and Duff continued to be a solid target up front. The boys kicked 5 goals to none in the last capping of a great regular season with a victory.

Final Score: Rebels 23.13.151 defeat the Hawks 6.2.38

Goals: Duffy 5, Aido 4, Sos 4, Buddy 3, Fabs 3, Wizza 3, Twoba 1
5:11 Warrior of the Game: Kevin Duffy

The Rebels now move onto the finals looking to defend the 2016 premiership. Their next game will be the preliminary final Saturday September 16th. Time and opponent still be decided. Thank you to all our supporters this season, please come down on the 16th and cheer the boys on!
