Sandown & Shanklin 2nd XV made the short trip across the Solent to play Hampshire 4 League Champions Eastleigh RFC 3rd XV, in the knowledge a victory would secure 2nd place in the league. Yet, it was not to be.
Despite the young squad travelling with enthusiasm, it was a tough task in the knowledge that Eastleigh's 2nd and 1st XV's had completed their domestic seasons, and could possibly help bolster their 3rd XV for the final fixture of the season.
Nevertheless, the Hurricanes put a valiant effort, but were outgunned on the day. This seasons revelation, Rob Newton Jr, scored the only try for Sandown, as they looked to find some traction in the 80 minutes.
Despite the disappointing defeat, it has been an excellent season for the Mighty 2nd XV, playing regularly and managing 14 victories. A slightly bittersweet statistic considering the teams immediately above the Hurricanes have less wins to their names this season.
Regardless, a round of applause should go to 2nd XV Captain Liam Little, for an excellent job in organising and leading the side throughout the season. Likewise, to all of the gentlemen that have turned out for the 2nd XV this season, and hopefully, they can take the next step in the next season and achieve promotion.
