Millhouses FC fight back to take points.

By

Shouts of "Baxter Out" heard from man with dog. Manager asks for more time.

Sheffield Bankers Pavilion began their new season with new manager Richard Baxter away at Millhouses fc ground Fir Vale. Baxter takes charge of the pavs after long term manger and creator of the Pavs Kev 'Wolves' Mason decided to pass on the reigns following a great number of years with the club. Hopefully we will still see him from time to time on the pitch for the pavs!

The game began at Fir Vale after the Pavs had been briefed on their new roles and expectations on and off the pitch. A changed approach to the pre-match warm up with a focus on organisation and quick passing, the home team were to start the game.

From the off it was clear that both teams were hungry for the win and following an early period of high intensity play it was finally the pavs who began to get the game under control. The first attack of note from the pavs saw Kieran Moore, playing in the number 10 role, perform a perfectly waited pass to Steve Bulloss who just failed to test the keeper after the ball skidded away from him. On the counter Millhouses fc carried on being a threat but were dealt with perfectly by debutante Tomos Brenchley and long term Pav Steve B in defence. On the occasion that Millhouses number 10 did break free some great sweeping by goal keeper Wilson.

On 20 a ball was won back by Baxter in midfield and played out to K.Moore who got the ball out to Matthew Taylor. Taylor then picked out Bulloss on the left who'd noticed Baxters unmarked run into the box. A well executed header by Baxter forced the first save of the game when the oppositions keeper managed to just put the ball round the outside of the post. The resulting corner saw the pavs come close again with a header just over the bar from K.Moore. Millhouses once again got on the counter and managed to break free past keeper Wilson and looked destine to break the deadlock but for a superb goal line clearance from Sam Giliver who'd ran half the pitch to get back in position and chase the player down.

Play carried on with the pavs starting to apply more and more pressure onto the Millhouses defence after a few close attempts. The deadlock was broken on 30 after Taylor won back the ball and played the ball to K.Moore who picked out the run into the box by Baxter. As the keeper came out Baxter casually (perhaps to casually) chipped the ball over the body of the keeper to bag the pavs first goal of the season. Just after the goal Debutante Brenchley was subbed off injured following more great work off the ball to cease the oppositions attack. The reshuffle at the back saw Naz replace Brenchely and slotting into LB and putting Giliver into CB.

The second half started off as fast paced for the Pavs as the first had finished. The Pavs were rewarded for their high intensity game play as soon as the whistle blew after a great run down the right of the pitch saw Fletcher played in and his shot too good for the keeper who couldn't do enough to stop the ball rolling over the line. Fletcher was later subsisted after putting in a good shift for the day and was replaced by returning John Mc Dougal who slotted in midfield. The Pavs continued to be in control on the game soaking up pressure and getting the ball forward well for the next ten minutes.

Into the closing twenty five minutes the pavs began to slow as the game was seemingly becoming well under control. However Millhouses were not going down without a fight. After a number of home team changes the Millhouses players grew in momentum. They came close to breaking the pavs defence but a great last ditch tackle by Hallett stopped them in their tracks. However the ref deemed the tackle over zealous and awarded Millhouses a freekick and a dubious yellow for the Pavs player. After the ball ricocheted around the box from the resulting freekick an opposition player managed to get in between keeper Wilson and Debutant John Booth, who'd played a convincing game at right back all day, and following some miscommunication round the keeper and put the home team back in the game. At 2-1 the last change on the day would see Ed Moore replace Baxter up front, giving Ed his long awaited Pavilion return and a fresh attacking option.

Not soon after Millhouses had got back into the game they'd won another freekick thirty yards form the pavilion net. The deflected free kick fell to an unmarked Millhouses played who thundered the ball into the top right corner giving Wilson no chance of getting a touch on it. Following the equaliser the away team remained on the back foot and once again saw a Millhouses player break away to chip a ball over keeper Wilson who'd made almost no errors in the game up until his mistimed punch saw the ball go past him into the net. 3-2 Millhouses.

The last five minutes the Pavs frantically tried to regain a point from the game with Moore, Taylor and holding midfield player Malpass (after a great solo run) all coming close to grabbing a point for the Pavs. But it wasn't to be and the game finished 3-2 to the home team.

An impressive start to the season for the Pavs who on the admission of the opposition manager did at least deserve a point from the game. Next week the Pavs take on Swallownest and will look to build on many of the positive periods of quick counter attacking and passing play shown this week.
