Shelford colts can't quite complete the double

A second half Wymondham come back takes the Eastern Counties cup out of Shelford's reach

Having gone out in the semi final last season, Shelford had already gone one better this season, but it was to win a final the boys really wanted. This was a match of two halves. In the first Shelford dominated possession and territory, but didn't score enough points to withstand the second half Wymondham come back.

From the kick off Shelford showed their game management and attacking intent. Wymondham found themselves pinned in their own half, unable to escape. Pretty much the only time the ball made it into the Shelford half was the kick off and restarts. Shelford's pressure quickly told, a penalty in range and James Gould opened the scoring, 3 - 0. Shelford then battered the Wymondham line for the remainder of the half. The Wymondham try line was crossed no less than four times, each time the ref required a long look to see if the ball had been grounded. Three times he said no, or was unsighted, and we came back for a 5m scrum. When easier points were on offer Shelford should have taken them, but in the heat of battle a tap and go 5m out seems like easy points, only Wymondham's try line defence was epic and they denied many Shelford drives. James Groser scored Shelford's only try of the half, burrowing over from a close range drive, converted by James Gould 10 - 0 and the score at half time. It could have been more.

In the second half Wymondham seemed a different team. Where Shelford had been stopping them behind the gain line they now seemed to make metres with every play, kicks that Shelford ran back now seemed to find touch and it was Shelford that found it difficult to get out of their own half. Wymondham found the space through what had been an uncompromising Shelford defence for three second half tries. With the score board starting to move against them, 10 - 5, then 10 - 12, Shelford were letting the match slip away. However, at this stage Shelford were still very much in it and made several forays into the Wymondham half, but little errors started to creep into their game that stopped their momentum. A knock on here, or a dropped pass there killed promising field position. Wymondham's third try in the left corner effectively ended Shelford's chances, brilliantly converted from the touchline it left Shelford needing two scores to win. In the final minutes Shelford again battered the Wymondham line, but only with time up did James Gould cross under the posts, then converting his own try for the final score of 17 - 19. An agonising defeat for Shelford colts.
