Tamworth 33 Stafford 17
Tamworth welcomed Stafford to Wiggington Park on Saturday hoping to extend their winning streak to 3 and started the brighter of the two sides. Pegging Stafford back into their own 22.
The home side were rewarded after 16 minutes when Skipper
Danny Norton crossed after some good work from Macaulay Green who ran a great line to burst through the Stafford defence and
Liam McGreevy who reacted first to pounce on the loose ball but as the ball was recycled Norton still had a lot to do and he was up to the task beating 2 tackles to dive over.
Callum Render added the extra points from the tee and Tamworth led 7-0.
The lead was short lived as Stafford hit on the counter and despite the best efforts of the retreating Tamworth defence levelled the scores at 7-7.
Then followed a real purple patch for Tamworth as the pack turned over a Stafford scrum
John Borthwick scored a fabulous individual try jinking his way under the posts leaving the visiting defenders in his wake.
Render was again accurate from the tee 14-7.
Tamworth fielded the ball from the kick off and mounted another attack working the ball smartly along the back line ending up with Rob Gemmill on the wing who bounced the final defender to cross.
Render slotted the extra 2 and Tamworth went into half time with a fairly comfortable 21-7 lead.
A combination of solid Stafford defending and a few mistakes from Tamworth kept the scoreline the same for the first 20 minutes of the second period before the deadlock was finally broken as the ball was won in the scrum it was well worked by Render,
Billy Green and
Conor Banham and a great offload to
Jimmy Carroll saw him go over to effectively put the tie to bed with the bonus point try 28-7.
Jon Arnold would round off Tamworth’s scoring crossing in the corner 33-7
To their great credit Stafford stuck at their task and scored 2 late try’s to narrow the deficit 33-17.
This win saw Tamworth move up to 2nd in Mids 2 and gives them a great foundation to build a successful season.
