A trip up the A1 awaits the 1st XV this Saturday when they travel to Stevenage Town. A win over Royston last weekend took London Welsh to the top of London 3 North West whilst Stevenage remained 7th, but only four points off 2nd place, thanks to their 37-17 victory at bottom placed Verulamians.
Stevenage Town have won three of their six league games this season. A tough opening round fixture against Old Streetonians saw them on the wrong end of a 45-24 score and since then they have alternated wins and defeats. Victories against Royston (44-22), Finchley (21-38) and Verulamians sandwiching defeats away to Cheshunt (19-14) and Old Merchant Taylors’ (18-24), the Royston game being their only home win so far.
Seven tries and a conversion made up their 44 points last Saturday. Centre Ian Compton ran in three of the tries with full back Michael Wilson and team captain Scott Quamby adding two each.
The 2017/18 season finished with Stevenage Town in 3rd position, ten points behind league champions Grasshoppers. They shared an identical record with runners-up Welwyn (15 wins and seven defeats) but couldn’t pick up as many bonus points and ended up six league points adrift.
The London Welsh 1st XV remain unbeaten this season with five bonus points wins and a much written about 0-0 draw. A penalty try in the final moments of Saturday’s home win against Royston secured maximum league points and opened up a five point gap over over Old Streetonians who lost their own unbeaten record in a 28-17 loss at Datchworth.
Kick off is at 3pm.
