It’s time to trek to Chard. It seems like only yesterday we were starting off the 2018/19 season and a blink of an eye later we only have 5 games left!
Chard’s season started ‘slowly’ with only 3 wins up until Christmas and in the mix of that were some sizeable defeats including one at Tregorrick of 33-5. The last game they played before Christmas on 22nd December was a 103-0 whooping by Bideford! Possibly not their strongest side ran out that day at a time of year when some player’s availability wanes. Since the festive break they have fared little better winning three but losing four. Notably they got a result against Kingsbridge 22-12. This leaves Chard in 13th place after 21 games on 33 points.
It’s worth mentioning the lower half of the WCW league this season. Six points separate 8th place and 14th. A bonus point win for any of them means quite decent advances up the ladder but safety does not come with it in a league that is starting to deliver some surprises as injuries start to weigh on squads.
The pressure was starting to build on a Saints squad that had been pretty consistently delivering until along came the end of January and a draw with Truro and league defeats to Wadebridge and Wellington occurred. With a few injuries to regular squad members occurring it’s fair to say the nerves were starting to jangle a bit. However, Saints dug in and showed some real grit and determination to come from behind against Bideford at Tregorrick to get the win that hopefully gets them back on form and track. Some great performances from the lads got them over the line and it was clear to see how much it meant to them at the final whistle.
The view from Head Coach Kyle Marriott: “A physical encounter against Bideford made the result all the better. We saw some outstanding defence throughout the game and our improvement throughout the season continues to show. Chard away this week end is sure to be another physical encounter. We fully expect a tough battle and hope to have enough up our sleeves to come away with the win. We are speaking about the few games we have left to come this season which makes each and every one all the more important. COYS!”
Sinners are home to Lankelly with hopefully a 2.30pm KO (I’ll confirm so check back) and the Colts now have a weekend off as their home fixture against Camborne is now forfeit to the Cup which they have a first round bye in. If you are not travelling to Chard then please come up to watch the Sinners at Tregorrick. Also we’ll be showing Scotland v Wales at 2.15pm and England v Italy at 4.45pm so all in all a good days rugby to be had.
Seats are available on the Chard bus for a limited number of supporters should you fancy a day out. Contact Al Cummins to secure one.
