Eight Barking Rugby Club U9s got to run out onto the hallowed turf of Twickenham and play a match on Saturday 2nd September!
After taking part in a morning Tag Rugby festival organised by Premiership Rugby, the team got lucky in a randomized draw for another Tag Rugby game during half-time in game one of the season-opening Double Header between Saracens and Northampton.
The Tag Festival was held on the sports grounds of the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall where 17 more young players from the Gale Street club, aged ten to 14, enjoyed a Coaching Clinic under the guidance of Saracens and London Irish community coaches.
The whole Barking group and their parents also enjoyed watching back-to-back European champions Sarries thump the Saints 55-24 and newly-promoted Irish turn over local lads Harlequins 39-29.
U9s assistant coach Jack Kendall declared: "So proud of our little team today playing Kneller Hall Festival and then chosen to play at Twickenham!! I nearly cried."
One parent added: "Well done to all the U9s, the U14s had a whale of a time too. A great day out for kids and adults alike."
Barking MMY secretary Max Oram said: "The day was a phenomenal success - many thanks to Premiership Rugby Community - and more outings like this are being planned."
Barking U14s certainly displayed the skills, teamwork and tenacity worked on at Kneller Hall and then shown regularly in the Double Header by Sarries and Irish in their first game of the season eight days later.
The result was a 22-5 home loss to Epping and Upper Clapton but the Barking performance was striking for the direct and yet elusive running off phase-play, huge number of tackles in defence and clear power at scrum-time.
Away coach Mat Kelley commented afterwards: "the game was played in the right spirit and our boys had to keep up the pressure to prevent you making a second-half comeback. Lots of positives for you to work on. Good luck with the rest of season."
