Bankies Bounce Back

After last weeks disappointing 36-24 defeat to second placed Stewartry, Clydebank 1st XV bounced back with a hard fought bonus point 24-18 victory away to Millbrae. The 2nd XV travelled to Ardrossan but were defeated 60-5 against an experienced side. With 18 players unavailable it was a great day for the club to be able to field 2 teams for 2 away games.

The 1st XV lost Jack Burgoyne early to a knee injury and shuffled the back division with Michael Crerand making his 1st team debut and performed well on the wing. Millbrae dominated the first 15 minutes with some nice attacking rugby but the Red and Blacks soaked up the pressure restricted them to only one penalty. Bank hit back with a Graeme Kyle try after some good build up play that Jack McCombe converted. David Warden then got his first try of the game when he picked up from a scrum and powered his way over the line. McCombe missed the conversion. Millbrae replied with a converted try of their own and it was 12-10 to the Red and Blacks at half time.

Both sides were having a real go at each other and it was an exciting and often bruising physical game as each other fought for the edge in the game. Millbrae scored another penalty to take a one point lead then after some pick and drives from their forwards they scored their second try of the game that was unconverted. Crerand had a chance to score down the right wing but was bundled into touch by some excellent cover defence but the next time Bank went down his wing they scored. The ball was passed out through the backs and David McLintock ran a switch move and sliced through the home defence to score. McCombe converted to give Bank a one point lead. Crerand was then instrumental in the fourth and decisive try as he kicked and chased and the ball was spilled into the home try area and they were pinged for offside. Miller took the quick tap penalty on the five metre line and passed to Warden who barged over the line for the bonus point fourth try o complete the comeback and win the game 24-18. At Ardrossan the home sides experience was key as they battered the 2nd XV and ran in several tries to pick up the win. Clydebank kept plugging away and David Kirkwood got Banks only try of the day as the home side won 60-5.

Next week the 1st XV entertain Paisley at home and the 2nds are away to Hillhead/Jordanhill.
