Bonus Point Win

Clydebank 1st XV played their last ever game on their pitch before refurbishment begins on the Clydebank Community Sports Hub and gave a fitting farewell as they beat old rivals Paisley 22-15 and picked up a bonus point and cement their position in 3rd place in West Division 2. The 2nd XV made the short journey to play Hillhead/Jordanhill and despite battling all the way were defeated 24-12.

Paisley had the first chance of the game when they broke down the left hand side but great scramble defence forced a knock on and Bank were able to clear their lines. The home side then began to take control of possession and territory and opened the scoring through Graeme Kyle when he finished off some sustained pressure by the forwards. Paisley's right winger sustained a suspected broken leg in the build up and an ambulance had to be called that delayed the game for some 20 minutes and the game was moved to the 2nd team pitch.

It was during this period that the Red and Blacks piled on the pressure and scored 2 further tries. David Warden got the second try when he picked up from the base of a scrum and powered over the line. Paisley responded with a penalty at goal but Jack Burgoyne extended the lead with a bit of magic from Jack McCombe. The forwards took the ball into the 22 and McCombe dummied and somehow managed to offload out the tackle to Burgoyne who ran a great line to score under the posts that McCombe converted. 17-3 at half time.

Paisley made a spirited fight back as the home side took their foot off the gas and were arguably the better side in the second half. They scored two tries, one converted, to make things uneasy for Bank who were unable to match the performance levels of the first half. Bank scored their bonus point fourth try through captain Ali Smart. They had other chances but were held up twice over the line and made mistakes at crucial times. Paisley also picked up a losing bonus point for finishing within 7 points.

Thankfully Paisley reported their winger hadn't suffered any fractures or breaks on his leg and we wish him a quick recovery. A bonus point win was a fine way to mark the last game on the old pitch as work begins on the new building and pitches that will provide a top class sporting facility for the rugby club, it's partners and the community.

David Kirkwood Snr provided the 2nd XV's two tries and was a danger throughout the game against Hillhead/Jordanhill but a combination of players playing out of position, inexperience and a savvy home side contributed to a home victory. Kirkwood was a livewire at scrum half for the Red and Blacks but was unable to spark the team to victory as Hillhead scored four tries of their own for the bonus point win.

The 1st XV have a 3 week break to their final game of the season away at Cumnock and the 2nds are at home to Whitecraigs.
