Gary Speed runs his eye over Wales’s stars of the future in Denbigh….

The next generation of Welsh international footballers headed to Denbigh Town FC over the Bank Holiday weekend (28th & 29th May).
Central Park home of Denbigh Town FC was used as the venue for this year’s FAW Cymru Cup, which sees the best Welsh U-14 players from across the regions showing off their talents.
Around 80 players from across the country were in attendance over the course of the weekend supported by strong crowds of over 400 people who enjoyed the weather and fantastic playing surface at Denbigh.
Taking part in the competition where teams from, South Wales, North Wales, Central Wales and a team made up of players from all the Welsh regions.
The players and staff from the Welsh Football Trust used Howells School in Denbigh as their base and accommodation for the weekend, with 6 games being played at Central Park over the weekend.
The purpose of the weekend was to give the country’s best young talents a platform to perform on and to identify young players who may become stars.
The weekend saw players from the ever improving Welsh Premier League academies form three teams, with an additional team being formed from the regional squads which meet regularly.
Welsh Football Trust technical director Osian Roberts said “In addition to the opportunities extended to the players, the Cymru Cup also provides an opportunity for Welsh premier League Academy coaches to develop and grow.
Coaches from the academies have been selected to work with the squads and alongside more experienced Welsh Football Trust staff over the weekend”
Football Association of Wales’ head of competitions Andrew Howard added: “For the players and coaches selected for inclusion, the weekend represents a fantastic opportunity to develop skills and knowledge and I am sure that everybody will leave having benefited from the experience.
It is not only the players and the coaches that would have benefited though, but the whole of Welsh football.”
