Newcastle Win Staffs Intermediate Cup
Newcastle 39 v 22 Handsworth
Newcastle went into the final at Stoke as under dogs as they had lost both League Fixtures to Handsworth.
Newcastle started well particularly in the scrum, the lineout and defence. Handsworth have strong runners in the forwards that attack off 10, Kieran (Capone) Johnson and Sam (the hitman) Longstaff were detailed to stop their runners which they did time after time with some aggressive tackling. The whole Newcastle defence was working well with a high level of intensity. It wasn't long before Captain Dan Jones powered his way over for a fine try after excellent forward play. Ronan Evans converted. Both teams played good rugby for the rest of the half as the teams swapped penalties. Half time and 10 v 3.
The cheering and singing from our supporters had been inspirational in the first half, it got better in the second with a real buzz in the ground. After good forward play Dan Jones powered over again, Ronan converting but Handsworth replied with their own converted try. 17 v 10 and 25 minutes to go. Ronan Evans converted a penalty and Newcastle then raised the intensity even more and the backs showed what they were made of after all the hard work from the forwards. From a turnover Sam Longstaff passed to Sam Evans who scorched down the wing to score. Minutes later Ronan Evans supported Olly Smalley to score. With 15 minutes to go Liam Bailey sprinted from 25 metres to score, Ronan converted. 32 v 10 and surely we were going to win. Handsworth never gave up and scored 2 tries at the death in between a Sam Evans converted try from a well executed backs move.
Newcastle saved the best performance of the season to the last game to beat a very strong Handsworth team. Well done to the 22 players who were highly motivated, put their bodies on the line, played with a great team spirit and played to the game framework. Thanks to the many supporters who turned up and supported the team so well.
