Eleven tries and ten conversions saw OLs run out easy winners against a resilient but in the end an overwhelmed Upton side.

The game began with OLs making a number of errors and it was the home side who took an early lead with a penalty in front of the posts after five minutes.

From this point on it was Old Leamingtonians in control of the game with their younger and stronger pack dominating the Upton forwards providing good ball for the fast running OL backs to thrive on. On the eight minute mark forward pressure deep into the Upton half saw back row forward Hugh Melhuish force his way over for the first of the OLs tries.

Upton remained committed and pressed the OLs defence but time and again they turned over ball and this resulted in field long moves by the OLs three-quarters that resulted in tries for centres Ben Perkins and Tom Eales and wingers Adam Stannard and Callum Semple. Stand-off Henry Reynolds converted four of the tries to see OLs reach half time with a lead of 33 points to 3 and a four try bonus point achieved.

As in the first half Upton took control of the game for the first ten minutes of the second half and pressure on the OLs defence saw a penalty awarded that was kicked into touch. From the resulting line-out deep into the OLs 22 metre area the ball was forced over the goal line for a home try that was converted making the score 10 - 33

From this point it was all OLs. The pack consistently dominated in the set scrum often winning Upton’s ball and freeing up the speedy backs but it was second row Joe Tallamini that scored the next try after further strong forward pressure. Tries followed in quick order with full back Oscar Heath touching down twice after pitch-length sweeping moves, and back row Hugh Melhuish completing his hat trick with two further tries. Ciaran O’Connor completed the 11 try haul late in the game. All of the six second half tries were converted bringing the final score to 10 -75.

In credit to Upton, despite being outplayed, they remained committed throughout the game but this was another first class performance by OLs playing open running rugby and keeps them high up the league table.

The Man of the Match award was shared between Back Row triple try scorer Hugh Melhuish and Centre Ben Perkins.

Next week sees Woodrush visit The Crofts with the earlier 2.15pm kick off.
