18. Norman Wainwright

Norman Wainwright

PROFESSIONAL CLUBS: Huddersfield, Batley

HONOURS: England RU U18's, Professional at Huddersfield RL & Batley RL

OTHER: Norman was one of the early boys to join the Shaw Cross Boys Club in l948. He played at loose forward in his first game at Shaw Cross and soon met up with Mick Sullivan and they became close friends. Norman became the centre with Mick his winger and in l950 the pair were selected to play for England Under 18's at Neath in Wales, not at Rugby League but at Rugby Union! It was through the National Association of Boys' Clubs that they became Rugby Union internationals and the following year, Norman and Mick were chosen again for the England Boys team against Wales at Bristol.

It was quite a feat for these two young Shaw Cross players and Mick Sullivan scored one try in the first international and two in the second one But back at Shaw Cross, they continued their Rugby League careers and both were later signed by Huddersfield and they continued their centre/wing partnership as professional players.

The rest is history and Norman had a short spell at Batley before his retirement. Norman and Mick both later became prison officers and they have remained good friends.

The picture which features on this page was supplied by Norman himself and was taken on 22nd August 1955 when Huddersfield beat Castleford 30-6 at Fartown. Norman and Mick both played that day with Norman grabbing two tries. You can click the photo to enlarge it.
