Adam Burnicle took his season’s tally to 14 league goals when he scored twice in Willington’s 3-1 home win over Birtley. Willington were gifted the opening goal when Birtley keeper Mark Fish failed to control a Craig Cowell back pass and the ball rolled into the net. Burnicle got the second direct from a corner, and then he ran through and fired the third. Birtley pulled a goal back from a Matthew Soulsby free kick. Willington manager Rob Lee said; “It was a very good result considering that we had ten players missing. A couple of our young lads were on their way to Seaham to play in a youth match, but they turned around and sat on the bench for us. All of our players gave 200 per cent commitment, and I couldn’t have asked for any more.” Birtley manager Tony Boakes said; “We played very poorly today. We never got going and for me that was the worst we have played all season.”. View News Item »

Willington lost 4-1 at Whickham. Mark Pattison scored twice for Whickham in the first 20 minutes, with Danny Lee pulling a goal back on the hour. However, Mark Fitzpatrick scored twice for Whickham to give them victory. Willington manager Rob Lee said; “We had too many players missing, we only had twelve. We didn’t play well in the first half, but we competed better in the second half and got the score back to 2-1. But their third goal killed the game as far as we were concerned.”. View News Item »

     A WORD WITH THE MANAGER

    A WORD WITH THE MANAGER

Update on squad injuries, Michael Gibson and Jack Patton are awaiting scans on knee injuries while Aidan Goodey is still recovering from a torn groin. Adam Pinkney is still unavailable for his first game since resigning due to an ankle injury. We are also at that time of the year when the lads have to work extra. Rufus Ayre has joined the squad, I thought he did really well when he came on last week, he has Northern League experience with Durham City FC and he played for me at under 18 level. Teams cannot leave us alone, again this week we have received 7 days from a couple of clubs for our players, this just upsets things and causes unrest. I think the players are doing really well and are giving 100% every game, we just need to cut out the silly mistakes ie: giving the ball away in the final 3rd, I preach if in doubt, it goes out. The players are a good set of lads who get on well, the banter in our changing room is brilliant. I'd also like to thank our supporters again for the great home and away support. View News Item »

Willington had their best win of the season, beating Alnwick 6-1 at Hall Lane. It could have been more if Jason White and Adam Burnicle hadn’t missed two penalties. Alnwick were in the game until the 27th minute when Burnicle opened the scoring, and before half time, he and Jason White had added two more. Bell made it 4-0 on the hour, and after Adam Shanks had pulled a goal back, Burnicle completed his hat trick, then added his fourth at the end. Willington manager Rob Lee said; “We played some good football today. As well as scoring six, their keeper saved two penalties.”. View News Item »

Norton are level with Seaham Red Star but with a worse goal difference after beating Willington 3-1 at Station Road. After a goalless first half, Nicky Martin put Norton into the lead after 56 minutes, then Rocky Andrews got the second from the spot. Martin made it 3-0, before Marc Bell pulled a goal back for Willington, who gave an outing to 16 year old full back Jordan Burke. Norton are unbeaten in twelve home league games this season. Norton manager Andy Campbell said; “I’m delighted with three points. We played really well in the second half and I’m pleased to keep the run going, especially with Team North losing.” Willington manager Rob Lee said; “I thought 3-1 didn’t reflect the game, we were as good as Norton. We created several chances and only took one. We lost to two defensive mistakes and a dubious penalty – we thought it should have been a free kick just outside the area.”. View News Item »
