With Saturday’s game at Brentwood Town falling victim to the weather, the Greens made two changes to the side which had lost at Bury Town on Boxing Day as Harry Norman and Gary Cohen returned to the starting eleven in place of the suspended Lewis Endacott and Lee Chaffey.
Heavy rain an hour before kick-off made conditions for the two sides tricky, however Dereham made the perfect start to the game, opening the scoring after only thirty-four seconds when Pride’s long kick up field was flicked onto Logan, who after cutting inside played a low ball into the area where Ryan Crisp was given room to place his shot low past Pope into the bottom corner. Soham had a couple of opportunities shortly after to equalise however Gillies headed wide from Buddle’s ball before Carden collected Clayton’s ball out wide where he advanced towards the area only for Pride to push away the curling shot before saving Bennett’s follow-up with his legs. Quarter of an hour into the game, the Magpies were awarded an indirect freekick inside the area after Pope was adjudged to have picked up Norman’s backpass, with Crisp’s shot from Forshaw’s layoff deflected over by the defender. The play was regularly switching ends with the visitors doubling their lead in the 28th minute after Pope gave away a freekick just outside the area after he slid out trying to gather the ball, for which the keeper was cautioned. From the left of the area, Forshaw delivered the set-piece through a crowded area with Ashley Jarvis getting the final touch to flick the ball home. Moments later, Crisp held off Norman to receive a forward ball, but after getting into the area was denied by a full stretched Pope. Just before the end of the half, Mochalski put over and Pope again denied Crisp before Dereham scored their third as the game moved into stoppage time after Hinton was allowed to progress through midfield, he delivered the ball wide to Rhys Logan who was given room to fire across Pope. Carden then headed over before Soham pulled a goal back two minutes into added on time as Bennett lofted the ball into the area to Jack Mochalski, who won it off Pride to take it wide of the keeper and roll it into an empty net for his first goal for the club.
Both sides made changes at the break with Callum Russell and Dan Beaumont being introduced as the Greens started to have the better of the attacking play. Within minutes of the restart Carden twice had efforts deflected behind whilst Russell and Carden had further shots blocked. Ten minutes in, with their first opportunity of the half, Beaumont collected a right sided ball into the area with the substitute volleying just over before the visitors were reduced to ten men moments later after Stephen Taylor collected his second yellow card of the game, this time for a foul on Russell. From the resultant freekick, Pride came off his line to punch clear from Cohen’s head. Both sides made further changes before with twenty minutes remaining, Logan played in Beaumont, but after getting into the area was unable to beat Pope one on one with the keeper deflecting the shot wide of the post before Buddle placed wide at the far post a Carden corner. The game became ten a side with fifteen minutes remaining after Josh Pope received his second yellow card of the game after bringing down Jarvis trying to deny the attacker’s run into the area. Callum Russell took over in goal however was unable to do anything with the penalty with Dan Beaumont sending the stand-in keeper the wrong way. Moments later, Logan made a run into the area from the right with Russell keeping out the angled shot with his feet. Before the end of the game Hobbs delivered an angled ball wide to Bennett, whose shot was kept out by Pride, with Clayton and Buddle having half chances before the final whistle.
