Robbo nets two as Town hit six

By

Denbigh Town 6 - 1 Llanrwst FC

Denbigh’s first game at Central Park under new joint managers Dewi Llion and Matty Jones saw the new squad hit six in a strong team performance which will stand them in good stead for the start of the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance season in two weeks time.

Denbigh started the game with the starting eleven that had drawn so impressively a week ago at Welsh Premier League team Bala Town FC. However within a minute they were down 1-0 as from the kick off Denbigh lost possession in their own half and Llanrwst’s forward picked the ball up and from just inside the penalty area curled a sweet shot past the despairing arms of Craig Vernon in the Denbigh goal.

This stirred the Town into action and was just the shock they needed as they went on to command possession throughout the first half. Centre forward Jake Walker had a goal disallowed after a strong challenge on Llanrwst’s keeper was deemed a foul. Sam Jones had a great chance to equalise but the keeper blocked well at close challenge.

The Town’s pressure was intensifying and following a foul on midfielder Ross Weaver, Sam Jones’ free kick hit the wall and on the rebound his shot went just over the bar. Weaver had a chance a few minutes later from a corner which saw him in space on the edge of the six yard box only for his header to go just wide

Town’s back three of Miles Todd, Tony Davies and Curtis Langton were now controlling the Llanrwst attack and limiting the work keeper Craig Vernon had to do to a minimum.

On 23 minutes Denbigh equalised through Sam Downey when Miles Todd found Sam Tate who played a ball between the Llanrwst back four for Jake Walker to run onto and cross to Downey who fired in from the edge of the penalty box

More chances came as the game moved towards the half time whistle with Tom Jones shooting just over and then left back Bailey Jackson finding Jake Walker who flicked onto Sam Jones whose attempt went just wide of the goal.

On 42 minutes Denbigh won a corner on the right wing. Sam Jones floated in an inswinger which the Llanrwst could’nt handle and the ball ended in the net for Town to go in 2-1 up at half time

The second half saw Denbigh introduce all their four subs - Lewis Sirrell, Scott McHarrie, Joel Hewitt & Mark Roberts. Roberts had an excellent chance with a header from six yards but it went just wide.

It was the 63rd minute which saw Town’s third goal from a Sam Tate corner which found Ross Weaver facing his own goal. He turned swiftly and fired in from 10 yards. Two minutes later Mark Roberts got his first of the afternoon and Denbigh’s fourth after a great cross found him on the edge of the six yard box and he headed home.

Scott McHarrie was impressing in midfield as he made some telling passes and the youngster also made some great challenges. Joel Hewitt slotted in well in his role and looked confident on the ball and was involved in some good ball play with his teammates.

Lewis Sirrell was coming into his own showing his great control and both he and Roberts both had individual chances to increase the lead.
On 82 minutes Sirrell provided a great cross for Jake Walker to head in for Town’s fifth, before Mark Roberts got his second goal and Town’s sixth on 86 minutes

Joint manager Dewi Llion said after the game “We were pleased with the performance in all departments against a competitive Llanrwst side. The early goal taught us a harsh lesson to which we responded well and this showed the team coming together in a positive way. With two more friendlies before the start of the season the squad is shaping up well and Matty, Pete Lloyd & I are looking forward to the start of the season”.

Their next game is on Wednesday 1st August at Central Park against Cammell Lairds of Birkenhead with a kick off time of 7.45pm
