Last week–end Abergavenny had their most successful results for some time with victories for both the MBA and GBL teams. The MBA team travelled to Caldicot where they won on all four rinks to win the game by 87 shots to 57, gaining fourteen league points in the process. The GBL team welcomed Blaina to Avenue Road and won on two of the three rinks to win the game by the narrowest of margins, 57 shots to 56.

In the game at Caldicot, Matthew Vale’s rink took charge after the seventh end. They scored eighteen points against their opponents six, over the remainder of the game, to win by 26 shots to 12. The result on Gethin Hill’s rink never looked in doubt from the sixth end. The Abergavenny rink gradually took control and went on to victory by 23 shots to 16. It was a closer game on the rink of John Beaton with scores being level with five ends to play. The Abergavenny rink managed to score eight shots in the final quarter to win by 20 shots to 15. Anthony Moriarty’s rink was involved in a very close game but managed to seize the initiative over the final eight ends, outscoring their opponents by seven shots in that period, to win by 18 shots to 14.

In the GBL game at Avenue Road, the winning rinks for Abergavenny were those of Ron Smith and David Powell. Ron Smith’s rink was nine shots behind after ten ends and then in a complete turnaround, Abergavenny scored fourteen shots over the next four ends to take the lead and then go on to win the game by 24 shots to 19. David Powell’s rink was always slightly behind their opponents but then scored eight shots over the final four ends to turn the situation and win the game by 21 shots to 16. Maurice Padfield’s rink could never quite match their opponents scoring and consequently suffered a defeat by 21 shots to 12.

Abergavenny also had a representation in the finals of The Monmouthshire Bowling Association competition finals at Pontymister Welfare last Sunday. Playing in the Senior Triples final, the Abergavenny trio of Gethin Hill, John Vale and Martin Doughty played against trio from Beaufort. Due to some excellent bowling by the skip of the Beaufort rink, who turned the situation and saved numerous shots on several occasions, the Abergavenny team was unable to bring back the trophy to Avenue Road. They now have the opportunity to turn around the situation when they play the same team in the Welsh Championship finals at Llandrindod Wells next Monday.

Prior to the Welsh Championship matches, Abergavenny have an MBA game against Blaina at Avenue Road and also travel to Abertillery for a GBL game. Abergavenny Ladies will play two friendly game against Croesyceiliog at Avenue Road and Garndiffaith away.
