Although thought to have been founded earlier, Ashton in Makerfield Grammar School
Old Boys F.C. entered the LAL in 1951. The Club changed it's name to Ashtonians FC
in 1985 following the Grammar School's change of status to become a Comprehensive
as Byrchall High School.
Originally the Club played at Liverpool Road, Ashton where players changed in the
whitewashed piggery at Worthington's Farm, walking a few yards along the road to the
pitch.
In the 1952-53 season a second team was formed and in the same season two Ashton players,
Brian Merry and David Rimmer represented English Universities, the LAL representative
team and Leicestershire & Lancashire FA's respectively.
The Club continued to prosper throughout the 1950's with Henry Webster and goalkeeper
George Southworth both playing as amateurs with Manchester United.
In 1959/60, the construction of the M6 motorway took away the Club's ground and the
adjacent Old Ashtonians Cricket field. During the next 10 years or so the Club had
a nomadic period, on occasions playing at Crompton's Rec. (an old Lancashire Combination
Club), Ashton YMCA off Bolton Road, and at Stubshaw Cross playing fields off Golborne
Road. Despite the unsettled time the Club prospered and grew to 3 teams.
