This ultimately led to the Club's 1st team winning promotion to the LAL Premier League
though the Club struggled to establish a permanent position and it returned into Division
One after the 1989/90 season.
An Under 18's team was entered into Sunday Bolton Boys Federation in 1985/86 and 1986/87
seasons in order that the young players playing throughout the 4 teams in the LAL
could play together on Sundays. The investment in youth was of limited success and
the Club has since reduced the number of teams playing in the L.A.L. from 5 to 4.
Although the first team has returned to Division One, the second team has since 1992
played in their top flight division, Premier Reserves.
In 1992 diminishing support from members was blamed for a decline in the Clubhouse
and it was decided to sell the building which was completed in 1994. This Building
has hosted many of the League Council and Sub Committee meetings throughout the last
decade and continues to do so even at the time of writing though it is now privately
owned.
In 1997 the 1st & 2nd teams changed ground and now play at Newton le Willows Sports
Club which freed the 3rd & 4th teams to move to the School pitches but in doing
so severed links with the old Ashtonian Club building after over 30 years.
Over almost half a century the Club's fortunes have ebbed and flowed, and regrettably
despite teams gaining promotion to their highest respective divisions, major honours
have eluded them with the exception of the 3rd XI who contested several finals and
semi finals in the 1980's.
The Club have been supported for many years by several local sponsors, but notably
Makerfield Timber Limited (managed by one time Secretary Phil Bryan), Levertons Plant,
and Walter Corless of "The Hingemakers Arms" a popular local hostelry.
