The pinnacle of Gary’s illustrious coaching career was the 2014 World Cup final, when he led the Red Roses to victory.
A former AOE Captain who made over 300 appearances for the 1st XV as well as achieving representative honours, Gary moved into coaching and quickly moved up the ranks to become England Head Coach in 2007.
Having led the Red Roses to 6 successive 6 Nations titles including 5 Grand Slams, his crowning achievement came in 2014 when he guided England to Rugby World Cup glory in Paris, defeating Canada 21-9 to secure a first world title since 1994.
His leadership and advocacy for the women’s game have helped inspire a generation of players and supporters, change the perceptions of many and create the platform from which the current Red Roses continue to thrive.
This recognition of his achievements is long overdue.
Everyone at Aston Old Edwardians are immensely proud of Gary’s accomplishments, and delighted that he has finally been rewarded in this way.
Many congratulations Gary, and we are sure that he would want to thank both his assistant coach Graham Smith, and his wife Helen (Flip), for their continual support throughout his career and beyond.
