Aston Old Edwrdaians Women 52 Handsworth 12

A team trip to Twickenham to support the Red Roses on Saturday may have accounted for a sluggish start for Aston, but they soon blew away the cobwebs to record a comfortable 52-12 victory over Handsworth, and climb to 3rd place in the league table.

The visitors had all of the possession and territory in the opening 10 minutes, but Aston's defence was strong, and absorbed the early pressure.  Jen Channer opened the scoring for Aston after 10 minutes, with a neat show and go, following some excellent work from Abi Coyne who was prominent in the loose throughout the game.

Aimee Tudor was next to score, when she popped up in midfield to break though the Handsworth defence, and Amy Garratty picked up the 3rd try of the afternoon 5 minutes later to ably demonstrate her ability to be equally as potent in the back line as in the forwards.

Handsworth, who never gave up throughout the game, responded with a try of their own, before Aston earned their bonus point with the best try of the match.  Lucy Thewlis, playing with considerable confidence, received the ball following some neat interchanges, and made a lovely outside break to find a gap between the 2 defenders for an excellent individual score.  With Grace Harris converting 2 of the 4 tries, Aston led 24-7 at half time.

The second period saw Aston pick up an early score though skipper Sophie Ferriman, and a Lily Lord touchdown for her first try for Aston (both converted by Grace Harris) ,  before Handsworth responded in kind to take the score to 38-12.

Sam Hart, playing in her 100th game for Aston and thereby earning her Centurions cap, was cruelly denied a try when she was held up over the line, before Grace Harris rounded off the scoring with 2 tries in 2 minutes, adding both conversions (one via a drop goal) to bring up a personal tally of 22 points, and to stretch the margin of victory to 52-12.

Jen Channer was named as forward of the match, with Amy Garratty picking up the back of the match award.  The opposition nominated Beth Hodgetts as player of the game.
