For once, the Beccs forwards started strongly and challenged every breakdown well. The scrum was also very effective - our line-out was not so good. On the other hand, TJ's line-out seemed to be working well and their No.6 was extremely effective in the ruck and was securing and stealing a lot of ball.
Both teams had minor breaks which were caught well on the wings. The match seemed very evenly matched. Then TJ's were awarded a penalty on the half-way line and our players retreated the required 10 yards but did so with their backs to the ball. TJ's were very clever and quickly took a tap penalty and passed the ball to a fast runner who ran through our lines practically unchallenged as we did not see him coming. TJ's placed the ball under the posts and then converted the try. A very clear lesson was learned (hopefully) - never turn your back on the ball. The Beccs lads were kicking themselves for their mistake while the conversion was taken.
HT: Beccs 0 - TJ's 7
The second half started with a re-doubled effort from TJ's that our lads were only just able to contain. In an early breakdown near the TJ's line, our No.10 - Harry Whitbread - suffered an injury to his head, just behind his ear and had to leave the pitch. His replacement - Matthew Tokarski - was nursing a heel injury and whilst trying his best we lost a bit of dynamism and organisation at No.10 from that point. Our No.12 - Jed Taylor - also came off the pitch with a knee injury and was replaced by Jamie Cheverst.
Despite all these changes, our forwards were still making a massive effort and even won two scrums against the head. Then after a concerted effort by TJ's and a series of goal line drives and hold-ups, TJ's broke through on the left wing and scored. The conversion attempt was very difficult and the kicker only just missed to his credit.
FT : Beccs 0 - TJ's 12
A great match with talented opposition. A shame that part of the score was due to a silly mistake, but TJ's were worthy of the win.
Thanks to TJ's for coming along and being such friendly and sporting opposition.
