On a slightly damp and blustery morning at Sparrow's Den, our local rivals Beckenham came expecting to repeat their comfortable victories of our last 2 meetings.
What they weren't expecting was for Beccs to come out from the first whistle, firing on all cylinders.
After 5 minutes with a well worked lineout move, Herb MacPherson scored the first try on the blindside making it
5 - 0 to Beccs.
From the resulting kick off Eoin McLaughlin gathered and ran it straight back at Beckenham, who were lucky not to concede again.
In the 11th minute with the ball going along the Beccs line, Luke Naylor scored under the posts with Benjamin Vaillant adding the conversion to make it
12 - 0.
Beccs continued to exert pressure with fast running rugby and after 26 minutes Akira Daley scored on the right hand side with Benjamin Vaillant very unlucky not to add the conversion, hitting the right post.
Finishing
17 - 0 at Half Time.
In the second half it was Beckenham who came racing out of the blocks, gathering their own kick off to score a converted try on the left hand side making it
17 - 7.
They continued to exert pressure but Beccs reacted with a great run out of defence by James Van Selm, stepping several Beckenham players on his way through. After repeated pressure on the Beckenham line, in the 45th minute, Herb MacPherson from No. 8 linked up with
Seiji Takahashi who scored with Benjamin Vaillant adding the conversion to make it
24 - 7.
Beckenham responded with some strong attacking play of their own, after 57 minutes driving over from a lineout to score another converted try to make it
24 - 14.
In the 63rd minute Eoin McLaughlin broke through and touched down for what he was convinced was a 5th try for Beccs but despite his protests, the ref was unsighted and it wasn't given.
Beccs persisted and held on to secure the victory
24 - 14, they now progress to the Met Cup semi-final away to Sevenoaks on the 15th of October.
Man of the Match: Matthew Swatton.
