The History of Bexhill United FC

Bexhill United was formed in 2002 following the amalgamation of Bexhill Town and Bexhill Amateur Athletic Club, who finished as runners-up in the East Sussex Football League Premier Division in 2001/02, four points behind champions Hollington United.

Bexhill Town Athletic were champions of the Sussex County League in 1956-57, and again in 1965-66 and 1966-67. In 1969-70 the club became Bexhill Town and played in Division One of the County League until relegation in 1980-81. The following season they were relegated once again, but won promotion back to Division Two at the first attempt. In 1989/90 they finished as champions of Division Two and were finally promoted back to Division One after several near misses in previous seasons.

The club struggled, but maintained its place amongst the County League’s top flight until relegation back to Division Two in 1993-94. Four years later Bexhill were relegated once more to Division Three, where they remained prior to formation of the new club.

Following a period of struggle in the lower reaches of Division 3 and a marked drop in their average gate in 2003/04, Bexhill enjoyed a renaissance in 2004/05, winning promotion back to Division Two as runners-up to Storrington, and finishing 8 points clear of third-placed Lingfield. The euphoria was short-lived however as they were relegated back to Intermediate football at the end of the following season, having finished 16 points adrift at the bottom of Division Two.

There was no improvement in 2006/07 with the club finishing just above the relegation zone on level points with the club just below them, Hurstpierpoint. Both however, were 15 points clear of rock-bottom Bosham. One consolation however, was a local derby against near neighbours Little Common, with the games at the Polegrove and Green Lane attracting gates of 158 and 181 respectively, excellent for Intermediate football. Bexhill's next highest home gate was 75, for the visit of Newhaven.

Bexhill United were promoted back to Division Two in the 2008/2009 season but where relegated once more.

The 2009/2010 season saw experienced Glyn White take charge as manager, a man with a passion and desire to lead Bexhill back into senior football.

Season 2010/2011 was Bexhill United’s best league finish in the last 20 years, finishing 4th of the Sussex County Division 2 league, 18 points behind leaders Lancing. Bexhill, who was guided by Gerard Moyse ended the campaign with 17 wins, 9 draws and 8 defeats and with conceding 47 and scoring 71 goals in total. Bexhill also reached the final of the HDFA Senior Cup against Sidley in which they lost 4-3 after extra-time and being down to 8 men.

Season 2011/2012 was another successful campaign for Bexhill United finishing the season under the direction of manager Darrol Parris with a respectable 7th place in the league and winning a hard fought victory in the HDFA Senior Cup against Sidley 4-3

Season 2012/2013 still under the direction of manager Darrol Parris, Bexhill United finished with a respectable mid-table position

Season 2013/2014 saw Kenny McCreadie take charge of the first team and the Pirates finishing with a respectable mid-table position as well as appearances in a cup semi final of one competition and a cup final of another.

Seasons 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 saw Bexhill legend Marc Munday take charge of the first team.

Season 2016/2017 sees Ryan Light and Nigel Kane take joint management of the 1st team finishing the season with a credible 10th place and 45 points.

Season 2017/2018 sees Ryan Light take sole charge as manager of the 1st team with Craig Ottley joining the management team as assistant manager.
