Brentwood’s “Big Weekend of Rugby” kicked off at King George’s at 3pm with 3 senior matches.

By George Adams.

With great weather and a good atmosphere the 1st XV hosted Chingford, a team that have always been a hard nut to crack.

Brentwood playing up the slope looked to use their strong forwards to test the Chingford defence, however due to poor discipline they gave away a series of penalties which enabled Chingford to ease any pressure and gain territory in Brentwood's half.

With the referee now watching the home team closely, Chingford were awarded another penalty which was converted from close to the halfway line giving the visitors a 3 point lead. This should have been a warning about not giving away any penalties within their own half, however Brentwood soon gave away another penalty which the Chingford kicker duly converted to double their lead to 6 – 0.

From the restart Brentwood attacked the Chingford catcher and retrieving the ball resulting with an attacking line out on the visitors 22 metre line. After a fine catch and drive the ball was released to the backline who crashed the ball in to the Chingford defence. The ball was recycled quickly out to the right wing where the move was held up, but with the defence stretched Brentwood scrum half Luke Green broke through to score. The try was converted by fullback Dan Whitehead giving the home team a 1 point lead at 7 – 6 with 15 minutes of the half remaining.

From the kick off Brentwood failed to secure clean ball and from the resulting scrum they conceded another penalty which was converted putting the visitors ahead 7 – 9.

Brentwood responded virtually straight away with a 30 metre break from tight head prop Tank Sherwood who managed to find left winger Arran Stanier to score wide out. This was converted by Whitehead.

With half time approaching Brentwood sat back thinking that they had done the hard work but Chingford had other ideas and swept into the Brentwood half for a good try which was converted. So instead of going to the break with 14 – 9 lead they found themselves with a 2 point deficit, at 14 - 16.

With the slope in their favour Brentwood were confident that they could forge on to win but knew it would involve hard work and commitment and better discipline than they showed in the first half.

Brentwood started the 2nd half well with the forwards to the fore with driving runs that has been a potent weapon for the home team, with the slope advantage the pressure from the constant attacks began to tell.

The forwards went close and the ball was released to the backs where centre Jon Wylie took a direct line and crossed the line for a well deserved try. With the conversion missed, the lead once again changed hands 19 - 16.

It seemed that now Brentwood had their noses in front and were playing with confidence and authority, they would close the game out. But as with the first half, if you take your foot off the gas, teams in this division will make you pay.

From a rare incursion into Brentwood’s half Chingford were awarded a penalty which was once again converted tying the game at 19 - 19. This spurred on the home team who once again took control by using their forwards to tie in the Chingford defence with pick and go’s from the base of rucks which provided the backline with the space to shine. They came close to scoring on 3 separate occasions from the ball being shifted out to the wing. From one of these attacks, after the ball had been recycled through several phases, Declan Gillett, who has played most positions in the backline, but was today playing fly-half, copied his feat of last week by scoring the 4th and bonus point try which was converted by Whitehead giving the home side a lead of 7 points.

Yet again whilst in control of the match and with the points seemingly in the bag, Brentwood allowed Chingford another lifeline when from a quick attack they crossed the line out wide on the right with the conversion to come to draw the game from their kicker who had only missed one long range penalty all match. Luckily for Brentwood the conversion was missed giving Brentwood a slender 2 point lead going into the final minutes.

From the restart Brentwood once again retained possession in the Chingford half and were awarded a rare kickable penalty which to the large crowds relief was knocked over by Dan Whitehead to give the home side a deserved 29 – 24 victory.

Next week Brentwood travel to newly promoted Beaconsfield where they hope maintain their progress this term.
