Superb display at King Georges

This was a consummate team performance from Brentwood who played with confidence from the start and grew in cohesion and execution, particularly in the second half, to complete their best performance of the season.

Brentwood won the toss and elected to play uphill into the gusting wind. Luton attacked from the whistle but found the home defence solid. However, after only 7 minutes the referee missed 2 knock ons by the visiting backs and allowed a try which was converted. Brentwood launched a series of attacking back moves which were rewarded after 15 minutes when fullback Declan Gillett scored a try, converted by Henry Bird to level the scores at 7 points apiece.

Luton used the elements to push into home territory but were thwarted by the solid Brentwood defence until the home backs were caught offside at a scrum and the resultant penalty was converted to make the score 7-10. Brentwood went up a gear and produced a consistent running game which repeatedly drove them into their opponents half. This pressure told as the visitors were forced to infringe to stop the attacks and two Bird penalties took Brentwood into a 13-10 half time lead.

The second half saw the home side use the wind and slope advantage to add a kicking game to their repertoire. After a series of attacks in the 22, scrum half Felix Harris crossed for a try following a ruck, Bird again converting – 20-10. The home side maintained the pressure and although Luton gamely tried to mount attacks, each time Brentwood regained the ball and moved their opponents back to their own try line. This concerted effort produced tries for Tom King and Tom Simpson, both converted by the metronomic boot of Bird to take the score to 34-10 going into the last quarter.

Luton rallied for another effort but again the home defence shut them out and regained the ball. With 10 minutes remaining Brentwood stole a Luton lineout throw and Lewis Pratley offloaded to evergreen James Metcalfe who sprinted clear then gratefully found Gillett on his shoulder to take the try scoring pass, Bird again converting from close to the touchline. Luton’s final effort in attack was snuffed out and replacement Arron Stanier sprinted 70 metres for the final try which Bird converted to bring his personal points tally to 18 and the final score to 48-10.

This was a fine all round effort from Brentwood with all team members contributing. It is to be hoped that Brentwood can carry this form into their final 2 games of the season. The next league fixture is away to Letchworth on 12th April.

Team :- Skurr, Roman, Pratley, Woodcock (Capt.), King, Metcalfe, Whaley, Binet, Harris, Simpson, Wylie, Thomas, Bird, Greenfield, Gillett – replacements Bassinger, Cowen and Stanier.
