A Home at Last
Most importantly during that season for the Clubs development, an agreement was reached with the Cosby Football and Cricket Clubs for the incorporation of rugby pitch on Victory Park alongside the existing sporting facilities. This was supported by the Parish Council, who provided the funding to enable the bottom section of the park to be redeveloped. It was here that the Clubs pitch and training area where sited. The whole of the existing area was stripped back, a drainage system installed and re-seeded. The Club is eternally grateful to the Parish Council, at this stage in its history; with out its own base in the village it is highly unlikely that the Club would have continued more than a couple of seasons. The official opening game for the new ground was a Sunday morning game against the Ancient Order of Foresters, who had been a regular fixture during the Clubs formative years. Until the Cosby Village Hall Sports and Community Committee obtained one of the first tranch of Lottery grants to build a new changing facility, the Club members changed in a Portakabin a long with a hired mobile shower block. These featured in a BBC Midlands Today programme about the newly formed National Lottery. The use of the showers required kit-off, towel wrapped around, followed by a dash along a soggy carpet in the fresh air. In mid-winter the use of this reached heroic proportions.
Further Expansions
The Club formed a second team in the 1994/95 season. This side played for 4 seasons until 1997/98, during this period it was captained by Clive Elliott. Its demise coincided with a national decline in adult participation in Rugby, nearly all clubs losing their "bottom" side. The Club is positive about its imminent revival with a limited number of second team games being played in 2005/6 and 2006/7 seasons.A floodlit training area was introduced in 1999; these facilities were officially opened by Dean Richards, Director of Rugby at Leicester Tigers, England and the British Lions. All the work was undertaken by members of the club, from drawing the plans, digging the cable trench, erecting the lighting poles and wiring the system.
Cosby RFC as a club has toured regularly during its history: Plymouth in 1994/95, Dublin in 1995/96, with games against Balbriggan and Turenure College. Tiverton (North Devon) followed in 1999/2000. Lately there have been tours to Ross-on-Wye and Hereford.
Playing History
In its early history the Club won the Cope Cup, this was in season 1989/90. They finished runners up to Loughborough Students RFC in the National League Leicestershire Division 2, during season 1995/96. Both games against the Students saw the club losing away by one point and at home by three, so close yet so far. The clubs strongest involvement has been with the Leicestershire Presidents Spring Cup Cosby had been losing finalists during, season 1996/97, 1998/99, 2000/1, 2001/2. The last final in the sequence was an extra-time defeat by Anstey. The club finally broke the sequence and won the cup in 2002/3. Defeating Rugby Welsh 21-20, in a game played at Lutterworth RFC, coming from behind to do so. Since then the club has won the cup again, beating Shepshed in 2005. When the club withdrew from the English League Championship, it entered the Leicestershire Clubs Merit Table, winning the title in 2003/4. Subsequently this has been re-branded and expanded as the Leicestershire Clubs Leagues. Cosby finished in a creditable runners-up spot in Division 3 during its inaugural season. The 2005/06 season saw the club promoted and also winning the Spring Cup making it the most successful season in the clubs history. The season 2006/07 saw the team establish itself in Division 2 of the Leicestershire Leagues and form a platform to challenge for a higher finish in the forthcoming season 07/08. The end of the season saw Cosby win the Spring Cup for the third time in three years.
Into the Future
Looking to secure its long term future, Cosby established a Mini/Junior section in 2004/05. Funding was gained from the National Lotteries awards for All Scheme. It will be a good while before anyone knows if a future Tigers Star or first teamer will emerge from the original cohort of 9 year olds but alot of satisfaction has already been reaped by watching the development of the future of the Club.
Season 06/07 saw Cosby recruit a promising group of Under 7's who developed rapidly through the season. Complementing our under 9's and 10's this group held their own in matches throughout the season culminating by winning the Ashby Shield at the Ashby Tag Tournament. The victory was sealed in terrible weather conditions with a last gasp try ensuring a memorable day for all the players parents and coaches. Season 07/08 saw the group grow in numbers with teams reaching finals in age groups 7's and 8's. This season 08/09 saw our min/junior ranks grow to nearly 40 players across 4 age groups. With links into local primary schools and Level 2 RFU seal of approval, this bodes very well for the future of Cosby RFC.
