3. History 3

The summer saw each weekend working parties endeavouring to get the club house and ground into shape, it was a labour of love. September was the start of the rugby season and we had a home at last. Water was heated by immersion heaters in two tanks, it was not always to the comfort of the players on cold wet days.

The next season the club obtained five porta-cabins and set-to to connect them to the existing club house. Saturday 21st December 1996 saw the additional porta-cabins up and inhabited. Before the games on that day the players had just the small club house facilities, upon their return after the games the club house had been transformed, we now had four additional changing rooms, and another shower room. The bar area was greatly increased. Further modifications took place over the next year, the bar was extended. On 15th February 1999 the building work commenced for the new pavilion, the estimated time was 32 weeks. While the work for the footings was taking place, an old cellar was discovered and had then to be removed before building work could continue. The pavilion was occupied on Friday 24th September 1999, it could have been completed for the week previous but the water board had forgotten to connect the supply under the main road. The gas supply within the building was found to be wrong, the pipes were too small and then had to be replaced.

The official opening was Sunday 3rd October 1999. The Pavilion is two storey, on the ground floor there are ten changing rooms, a disabled changing room , and a changing room for match officials (referees).
