John was aged 71 and had played at Moor in the early 1970s and was a 1st XV regular for the club for a few seasons, playing at fullback and wing three-quarter, including being a member of the team that reached the Lancashire Cup semi-final in 1974.
He subsequently moved to live in Sheffield where he played regularly for Sheffield RUFC for the rest of his playing career and when he hung up his boots, he became heavily involved in the running of the club on the playing side.
