It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one the club's greatest ever young talents. Liam O'Connor played for many years in the M&J Section, Junior Colts, Senior Colts and made his senior debut before heading off to Newcastle University to pursue a degree in Maths and Finance.

Liam won the player of the season award on multiple occasions and was without fail a consistent match winner for the age group he represented. Liam studied at St Ambrose and played for the school 1st XV; he played every representative age group for Lancashire from U13s through to U18s. Liam was on the Sale Sharks Developing Players Programme and in the Sale Junior Academy. His excellent rugby career started at Didsbury Toc H, before coming to Heaton Moor, Lancashire and Sale Sharks. During his two years at university he represented Newcastle Medics. Every one of those teams and its players had a true star and warrior in their team in Liam.

Tragically, a car hit Liam late on Friday evening in Newcastle. Liam had just completed his second year at Newcastle University.

Liam enriched the Heaton Moor team, often getting us winning results with his brilliant rugby skills and athleticism. He always played rugby with a smile on his face and always supported his teammates and the coaches on the team. He was a great player on and off the pitch. He epitomised the spirit of Rugby Union, the team and always made his parents proud of his achievements.

It is safe to say Liam was the complete rugby player. Liam won many awards at the club - player of the year on several occasions. Liam never wanted personal acknowledgement and awards. He was always a player who cared more about the team’s results than personal awards. As I write this the whole team are completely heartbroken and our thoughts turn to Joan, Mike, Sean, Kathleen and the family. A brilliant family who always supported Liam’s rugby and the whole rugby team. We cannot imagine how the O’Connor family must be feeling. From us all, we are here for you and Liam remains in our hearts and minds forever.
