Who can join?
Our Juniors section is open to boys and girls from year 2 (aged 7) up to late teens.

Total beginners are welcome to join, as well as those who might have played with friends, at school or for another club.

In 2021, HCC set up a section for girls aged 10 to 13 (year 5 to 9) if girls would prefer to train and play with girls and in 2024, Horley Girls will play in a league for the third year.

When does training start?
Indoor training and net practice starts in the Spring as pre-season training in Feb or March. Please see Juniors Training page

What does my son or daughter need?
For younger players aged 7 to 9 (years 2,3,4) and girls playing soft ball cricket (Years 5 to 8), no equipment is required. Wear something comfortable and trainers and bring a drink. If cold, wear a hoodie and if hot, a hat and sun lotion! For match wear, see Playing for Horley below.

Protective Equipment
When playing hardball cricket, (U10 upwards), players will need protective equipment – helmet, gloves, leg pads, box & shorts for boys. Due to Covid, it is not possible to share protective equipment, so unfortunately players will need their own. It is possible to join a training session to try out before signing up.

Playing for Horley
For matches, your son or daughter will want to wear cricket whites and in particular a Horley shirt.

Our sponsor Keymex regularly subsidises juniors shirts for parents to buy at much reduced cost. Please contact your team manager to check whether there are any subsidised shirts for your team this year. If this is not available, you can buy a Horley shirt from the on-line shop.

Matches
Once Junior members are ready to play matches, they will play for their age group team for Horley in the Surrey Junior Cricket Championship league (SJCC) which runs a league for every age group from U8 and a cup tournament for the older sides.

Matches for most teams start at the end of April and continue through to July and have regular match days for most of their fixtures.

In the summer holidays, for the u11s and older teams, Horley competes in the brilliant Sussex Junior Cricket Festival which provides a week of longer matches for each age group in the afternoon and is usually the cricket highlight of the holidays. You can find out at the beginning of the year which week your team will play to help you plan your summer holidays.

Senior Colts
Horley is keen to integrate older Colts into its senior teams and many play for the veteran Strollers as introduction to senior cricket, progressing to other teams. The seniors 3rd XI, playing in a league since 2022, will provide excellent opportunities to play. This year, senior Colts played indoor cricket during the Winter in senior leagues.

Will I use a hard cricket ball?
For players aged 7 to 9 (years 2,3,4), we start with Incrediballs and wind balls, both are soft balls made of rubber.

For older players, U10 upwards (year 5), hard ball will be used in training when safe to do so and in matches.

For girls in years 5, 6, 7 and 8, the girls section will use Incrediballs and windballs. Girls can play hardball cricket in the mixed teams. Older girls (u13s plus) can play in the Ladies team, and there are options to continue with softball cricket or start to practice hardball cricket.

What does the Club do for welfare and safety?
The safety and welfare of our Juniors is our priority. All our coaches, managers and match officials are DBS checked and we have a Club Welfare Officer Helen Bunn responsible for safeguarding. Please see this website’s Contacts page.

What do I need to do as a parent/ carer?
For younger children, you will need to bring your player to the Club (and away ground for matches) and stay at the ground during training/ matches unless you have arranged for another adult to look after your child. Our club is friendly and the Club provides a nice social environment for parents to meet and get to know each other particularly as the weather improves.

When children join a team, parents are expected to help with the team, as every team is run by volunteers and over time, parents get to learn more about the game and get involved as scorers and umps, managers, fundraisers, match fee collectors.

Teams can also organise to see a cricket match together, have social events and get involved in club events.

Many parents end up joining the Club to play cricket. We have a Ladies team full of women new to cricket and a range of Men’s teams 1st XI, 2nd XII, 3rd XI and the veteran Strollers.

How much does it cost?
Costs for your son or daughter playing cricket at HCC in 2024 are:

• Junior Sports Membership fee £25

• The training fee: Cricket Coaching Fee £55 (Cricket Sibling Coaching £45)

• Match fees of £4.30 each time are payable each time your child plays a match and is collected by the team manager using the Pitchero app. It includes a small admin fee for Pitchero.

Once you are happy for your son or daughter to join, have talked to the Team manager and attended a trial training session if you'd like to, please follow these instructions to join the Club

Last year, we transferred to joining on-line for all Junior Members. In previous parents have had to complete a 4 page membership form for each child, every year.

We have created an online membership form to get basic membership details into our database. This will also register players for Pitchero app which is used for player availability and team selection for every team.

First timers!

Go to Horley CC webpage
Click on Join button on the Home page.
Enter basic details - name, address, phone, DoB etc and select Join this club

HCC Webmaster will agree to you joining shortly and you will be asked to complete membership information for your son or daughter. Please make sure this is fully completed for Junior members, even where not mandatory.

You will now need to pay for your child's membership and coaching fees.

Continuing your membership

You will already be registered on Pitchero.
Now you will get prompted to complete membership information.
Go to YOUR ACCOUNT
Select the account for your son or daughter (NOT your own) This is at the top of the page.
Please check all fields are still correct, especially emergency contacts and medical details. Make sure you are happy to continue your parental consents. Agree to the 2024 membership box.

You will now need to pay for your child's membership and coaching fees.
