This past weekend, Huntsville made the long trip to Johnson City, TN to conclude the home/away series against the Twin State Lions. Soggy field conditions would set the stage for a grueling, physical affair between the two teams.
Huntsville, traveling with a 16 man roster including rookie forward Rusty Richardson, would have to face a more determined and experienced Twin States team than from the previous weekend. As kickoff would occur, Huntsville had little knowledge of what Lions would be coming out of the cage.
After a series of back and forth phases, it would be Twin States who would strike first early on the score board, touching down following a short penalty. Shortly after, speed and persistence allowed Shane Brown to get Huntsville on the board. Continuing their onslaught of backline attacks, returning player Braden Stults would score followed shortly by another score from Shane Brown with the conversion by Ryan Roof to give Huntsville the lead at 17-5. A break in Huntsville defense allowed Twin States to put in two more tries and bringing the score to 17-17 to close the first half.
The second half would prove to be just as physical as the first. With both sides showing signs of exhaustion and injury, it would be difficult to determine an outcome to this Saturday afternoon brawl, but pace was not lost by Huntsville. The forwards were successful in set pieces and with the backs taking advantage of TS shallow back three, Shane Brown and fullback Ryan Roof would touch down a try apiece. After a conversion from Jeff Shapiro, Huntsville would take the lead at 29-17.
The match would conclude with additional scores from Shane Brown and Braden Stults and one more try from Twin States closing out the match with a final score of 39-22.
