Strong opposition a good test for the seconds

Kings Norton Seconds had a couple of weeks away from Merit Table duty, instead they faced two strong and experienced sides.

Old Hales 3rd/4th team were the first to visit Hopwood Park, and they turned up with a good blend of both youth and experience. Unfazed by this, the men in red and gold took the game straight to their opponents and were the much more dominate side, playing some excellent phases of rugby and being quick thinking in defence. With 25 minutes gone they were deservedly 7-0 up and it could have been more. A minor altercation in the second quarter of the game seemed to kick the Old Hales boys into life and they started to move through the gears and using the pace they had out wide soon ran three quick tries to take the lead at half time. The second half was very similar with Kings Norton playing some positive rugby and pressurising the Old Hales’ line but the final execution seemed to be lacking. The opposition were able to counter attack from deep on several occasions to run in a few more tries. KN didn’t lie down and refused to be humiliated. They stayed in the game and showed that they could also move the ball wide and created an excellent score. With the final score 6 tries to 2, the second team took a lot from the defeat against a well organised set of opponents.

The following week was more of the same for the second team. This time a tough trip to Bromsgrove. On arrival it seemed liked the Vets team that they were meant to be playing had been swimming in the fountain of youth and also multiplied into a squad of 30 plus. Kings Norton remained positive and competed for long periods of the game. Enforced changes through injury disrupted the flow of the KN game, that and the constant sound of the referees whistle. The game finished 27-0, bearing in mind that the previous two trips to Bromsgrove had resulted in a cumulative score of over 200 for the second team, so vast improvements in the team are clearly showing and if a couple of final passes had gone to hand the score line would look a little bit different.

Despite the two defeats, the young Kings Norton team have developed through playing tougher opposition and have galvanised more as a team. This week the Seconds are back in action in the merit table with an away fixture at Kidderminster. KO 2.15.
