First bonus point win of the season

Last Saturday, in exceptionally high temperatures, the Lions welcomed Helston to Lux Park, for the 2nd round of matches in the Counties 2 Tribute Cornwall league.

Liskeard started well and put the visitors under pressure and in the fifth minute, following a series of drives by the pack, lock forward Mike Prowse crashed over for an unconverted try.

Helston came back at Liskeard to put pressure on the home side deep in their twenty-two, but great defensive work, by the men in red and black, kept them at bay. In the eleventh minute Helston managed to score a converted try to put them into the lead at 5-7.

During the next nineteen minutes Liskeard lost their shape a little and on the half hour Helson scored a catch and drive converted try, from a line-out inside the Lions twenty-two. The final scoring of the half was at the end of forty minutes Helston were awarded a penalty on the Liskeard ten metre line, the option of a shot at goal was taken, the ball sailed between the posts to give them a 5-17 lead.

In stoppage time, following great work by the Liskeard pack, the ball was released to the backs for wing Jack Badnall to go over in the corner for an unconverted try.

It had been a frustrating half where Liskeard had started well, went to sleep a little, possibly caused by the heat, and then finished the half strongly.

In the forty fifth minute, a Liskeard scrum, on the right-hand side of the pitch. where the ball was released to the backs, reaching the left wing, where replacement winger raced in for an unconverted try to make it 15-17. Late in the game, following more good work by the Liskeard pack driving the ball deep into the Helston twenty-two, with full back Kieran Underhill touched down for the bonus point try, a great way to celebrate your birthday, this time goalkicker, centre Camron Smith, finally found his kicking boots and he slotted the conversion to make the final score 22-17., this puts Liskeard into fifth place at this stage of the season.

View from the touchline it was a deserved win for Liskeard, although they made it hard work at times, the Lions had played well with centre Jordan prominent showing his pace and skill levels.

The next match for Liskeard is next Saturday where they travel west to play Illogan Park with a kick off time of 1500.
