Last Saturday, that saw a return to league action, The Lions welcomed high flying Paignton, sitting 2nd in the table, to Lux Park; there had been a pitch inspection in the morning and a team of hard-working volunteers from within the club ensured the pitch was playable.
Liskeard started fairly well but conceded a penalty, just outside their twenty-two, this was slotted to put the visitors in front. Liskeard went back at Paignton but failed to gain any points and then they conceded a second penalty, on twenty minutes, on their twenty-two and a shot at goal was taken and slotted to double the lead, even with both sides trying to play good rugby the defences held firm and no further scoring took place before the half time whistle. It had been a good half for Liskeard as their excellent defence had stopped trying chances being made by the visitors and The Lions should have perhaps had points on the board; a mixture of good Paignton defence and dropped passes had prevented this.
The first eighteen minutes were extremely tight, with The Lions forcing their way deep into Paignton territory where they had a good chance of scoring with a scrum, inside their opponents twenty-two, but the referee adjudged that Liskeard had pushed too early awarding a kick to Paignton and they cleared the danger, then in the fifty-eighth minute Lions prop Ben Palmer found himself in the sin-bin, conceding a penalty, inside the home twenty-two, in the process and a shot at goal was the option taken and slotted. Now with only seven forwards it was a case of backs to the wall defence for Liskeard and in the sixty-fifth minute Paignton had a scrum deep in home territory drove forward and released their backs to go in for a converted try. However this sucker punch didn’t stop The Lions from coming back at the visitors but to no avail and the game finished with a Paignton at 16-0. A good game of rugby but it was another match that had got away from Liskeard; their next match is this coming Saturday when they make the trip to Penzance to take on sixth placed Pirates Amateurs with a 1430 kick off.
