Bakelock suffer disappointing defeat

Bakelock welcomed Ashbourne to the Meadows for a game that is traditionally a close fought affair.

Ashbourne started strongly as their big forwards tested the Bakelock defence and only super tackling from Ellison and Mayhew together with excellent kicking from Orridge keeping them at bay. Ashbourne wouldn’t be denied, however, running in 2 tries in quick succession.

Bakelock’s pack responded well enjoying a sustained period of possession drawing in the Ashbourne defence. Realising this Orridge quickly shipped the ball out wide to Morley who gratefully accepted the invitation to score. Half time Bakelock 5 – 10 Ashbourne.

Bakelock started the second half badly immediately conceding following several missed tackles. The home side responded once more as Peachey side-stepped his opposite number before racing over between the posts.

The Bakelock forwards battled well, Stevenson taking two difficult high balls under extreme pressure and Lillis, Swindell and Dakin working tremendously hard in defence. With this sound platform Orridge was able to pick his spot as he kicked over the Ashbourne defence, Peachey chased down the defender and won the ball, the supporting Morley finished off what is fast becoming a Bakelock signature move. With the score at 17 all and Bakelock in the ascendency it looked good for the home side.

Rugby can be a cruel game, however, as injury and bad luck conspired against Bakelock seeing Ashbourne run in two quick tries. There were further glimpses of defiance with Brookes, Linathan and Morley threatening down the right flank but in the end Ashbourne proved too strong out wide as they ran in two more unanswered tries emerging worthy winners. Final score Bakelock 17 – 41 Ashbourne.

Coaching points

No one likes to loose but with a weakened line up I was very pleased to see us at least holding our own for 40 minutes against a very good side. Injury played a big part and we hope James has a speedy recovery. The forwards held strong throughout the game with the opposition having to look out wide for opportunities. We were also able to give several inexperienced players much needed game time.

The passing in the backs was excellent at times but we do have to improve our one on one tackling. I know it’s not an easy task against the power and speed of Ashbourne but Jacob, Jack, Harris and especially man of the match Tom showed tremendous technique and most of all bravery today, setting a fine example.

Training as usual on Wednesday

Thanks
