Bakelock under 14’s travelled to Lincoln to take part in the annual tri-county rugby sevens tournament.

Fielding 2 sides, the Reds and the Blues, hopes were high after narrowly missing out last year but the competition was even stiffer this time around with the best 20 teams in the region taking part.

Bakelock Blues had a very tough group facing hosts Lincoln as well as competition favourites Newark. With some superb battling performances they came through the group to compete in the shield semi- final.

In horrendous conditions the Blues lined up against a very well drilled Newark b side. The game was nip and tuck as the forwards huffed and puffed in the mud and rain. Newark seemed to have the edge as they ran in 2 long range tries.

Undeterred Bakelock hung on, Ellison making a great try saving tackle to keep the match alive. As the time ticked by the ball eventually went out wide to Linathan who outpaced the opposition to score a superb try in the corner.

With Bakelock pressing and searching for an equaliser the final whistle blew Newark narrowly winning 10 points to 5.

Bakelock Reds eased through the group stages playing some excellent sevens rugby along the way. Qualifying for the Plate semi- final Bakelock were pitted against tournament hosts Lincoln. The game began evenly with tries for both sides but Lincoln could not contain Bakelock’s powerful backs as they ran out 27 to 10 winners.

On to the final and with the wind and rain blowing in their faces Bakelock Reds conceded 2 early tries to a very impressive Southwell side. Bakewell hit back with a superb try from Morley before Southwell responded with another to leave Bakelock with a mountain to climb. Great forward work from Brough, Butterworth, Lillis and Fitzsimons secured possession for the backs who capitalised brilliantly as first Peachey and then Morley powered over to square the game.

With only seconds to play Orridge had a chance to win the match with a near impossible drop-kick conversion from the edge of the pitch. With a gale force wind to contend with he struck the ball beautifully sending it between the posts and off the upright for a score.

The final whistle was greeted by ecstatic celebrations Bakelock Reds running out 17 to 15 winners and NLD Plate champions.

A great day despite the atrocious conditions. Thanks to the parents for their enthusiastic support. Thanks to all the lads who played especially those players that haven’t played sevens before, very well done.

Finally I have to apologise for some of the coaches’ celebrations and pitch invasion at the end of the final. It was somewhat reminiscent of the famous Ferguson/Kidd ‘dad dancing’ celebrations after another great ‘Reds’ team staged a miraculous comeback!
