Barry joined the OL’s in 1974 after moving to Leamington Spa from Luton. Before arriving at the club, he had played for Eaton Manor, London and Old Dunstablians, Bedfordshire. When a career move brought him to Birmingham, Barry settled with his family in Whitnash. On meeting his new neighbour he asked, “Do you know where there is a local Old Boys rugby club?” The reply, “Oh yes I do, and I will introduce you on Saturday,” came from none other than the late Life Member and Club President Terry Arnold.
From that moment on, Barry became a true stalwart of the club. A dedicated open-side wing forward, he captained the Bedouins, served as Chairman of Selectors, organised the club’s first public fireworks night, and founded the very first mini and junior sides because he didn’t want his son playing at Leamington RFC, or in his words “that lot down the road!” Barry also chaired the Club Development Committee, overseeing the construction and opening of The Crofts at Blackdown. Barry served as Vice Chairman and in 1982 he became Club Chairman, and in recognition of his outstanding service he was awarded Honorary Life Membership in 1996.
In later years, Barry was a familiar face on the sidelines supporting the First XV. After matches he would be found in his spot at the corner of the bar, at that time fondly known as Old Boys Corner, enjoying a pint and sharing his thoughts on the game. Following his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, his visits became less frequent, but his affection for the club never waned. His final visit came in 2022 when he celebrated his 80th birthday among OL’s friends.
Barry’s contribution to our club spans decades and leaves a legacy that will be remembered with pride and affection.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and all who knew him.
