Old Leamingtonians 66 - Bromsgrove II 14
OL’s turned on the style in this final league game in the 2024/2025 season to run in five first half tries and five second half tries, eight of which were converted by fly half Jordan Gott to give OL’s a comfortable win 66 points to 14.
The game kicked off and OL’s immediately took the play to Bromsgrove and within the first ten minutes had touched down two tries created by flowing 15 man rugby. The first was scored by Joe O’Loughlen and the second by Alex Witchell, both of whom went on to score hat tricks of tries during the game. Bromsgrove were forced into defence for much of the game and the visitors game plan was purely based on a big pack trying to create space and territory with repeated forward drives that OL’s staunch defence controlled throughout the game despite conceding two tries in the process.
There was a better controlled performance from OL’s, conceding very few penalties and winning good line out ball that allowed the half backs, Toby Lord and Jordan Gott to supply good quick ball to the fast running OL’as backs that saw tries added by Joe O’Loughlen and Alex Witchell to give OL’s a half time lead of 31 points to nil and gain a valuable bonus point in the process. Jordan converted three of the first half tries.
The second half followed much the same pattern as the first with OL’s playing creative 15 man rugby and Bromsgrove staying with a forwards driven game that provided OL’s with space to develop flowing attacks on the Bromsgrove defence that resulted in further tries being touched down at regular intervals during the half by Alex Witchell, Sam Marlow, Ollie Sarginson, Joe O,Loughlen and Will Andrews. Jordan Gott converted all five second half tries to give OL’s a convincing victory by 66 points to 14 and end the season in sixth position in the league.
OL’s remaining game is in the cup next Saturday when they play Old Laurentians away in Rugby.
This was another good performance by OL’s that extended the series of wins that saw them rise up through the league. It was a fine all-round performance with every OL’s player on the field contributing, particularly in a solid defensive display that allowed responsive attacking rugby that created nine tries all from flowing rugby. It was an enjoyable game to watch by a large gathering of OL’s supporters.
