Recent Signing Calum Ward Speaks to Ingfielder

Calum Ward is a 20 year old striker who joined the club recently from Glasshoughton Welfare in the Northern Counties League where he had a very productive start to the season, firing in 15 goals before the call from Ossett Town came.

“I have lived in York all my life” Calum tells Ingfielder. “I grew up playing for my local team before starting to progress at u16 level, I represented York school boys then went on to captain the north riding county team. During the under 16s season football started to become more serious as I played for York city and Grimsby town wanting a youth team contract”.

That wasn’t forthcoming for Calum and after beingreleased he signed for Tadcaster Albion at the age of 16 and spent three years there with a short spell at Selby Town in-between. It was this summer he joined Glasshoughton Welfare.

Calum describes himself as “an aggressive determined striker who always wants to get on the end of things”. He likes to hold up the ball and bring other players into the game which will suit the likes of Eyles and Moke. “I like a good battle with the centre backs and always want to make life difficult for them and put them under a lot of pressure”.

“I have really enjoyed my first few weeks at the club and it was made easier by the type of lads and management we have at the club. I knew a couple of the lads from Taddy before I came so that also helped me settle in. Ossett Town is a great club to play for at the moment and I'm proud to be a part of it. I really appreciate the fans commitment especially the young lads, they don’t stop singing and it means a real lot to me. I hope the team and I can give them more to sing about. I'm looking forward to every game, home or away and want to prove myself.

Compared to the Northern Counties Calum has found the football played in the Evo-Stik is a faster pace than he is used to “obviously the players around you and against you are of better quality but I know I'm up to challenge and want to be successful with Ossett Town”.

“I always set myself goal targets but like to keep these a secret. I hope to score as many as possible but my main aim is to work as hard as I can for the team and staff to help get results and push Ossett Town up the league table. With the players we have I believe we can get in the play-offs if we all stick together. If the goals come then it's a bonus.

“Away from football, I am currently doing a PE teaching degree at York St John. I work part time for York city and PE plus. I spend a lot of time with my mates and enjoy a bet on football and horse racing occasionally”.
