Otley withstand Caldy's late revival

Nick Doyle

Ben Cooper’s performance guided Otley through a determined Caldy fightback to an impressive victory.

With two players in the sin-bin during the second half, Otley had to withstand a determined effort from Caldy in the final quarter as they began they threw everything at Otley to reduce a 32-6 deficit. However it was too late as Otley had already scored four tries.

Strong running from both sides had kept the result in the balance, with Otley shading it with prop Toby Williams and No 7 Daniel Temm taking the game to Caldy. With a composed display by Ben Cooper, two penalties and three conversions to his name, the Otley back row had the opportunity to show what they could do.

Caldy were rocked in the first minute of the game as their back rower Adam Aigbokhae left the field with a serious injury. Otley were first on the scoreboard as they kicked a penalty after four minutes which was soon cancelled out by a Richard Vasey penalty on seven minutes. On 11 minutes, an excellent rolling maul had Otley back rower Johnathan Matthews grounding the ball, although Cooper missed the conversion. Richard Vasey kicked a further penalty before a break by Daniel Temm gave the chance James Twomey to score his sixth try of the season in the corner to give Otley a 15-6 half time lead.

Otley started the second half the brighter side and Ben Cooper stretched their lead with a penalty kick before a long phase of play allowed the excellent Daniel Temm to break a tackle and race under the posts for a well deserved score. The ever present Toby Williams found space to go over from close range, with Cooper adding his third conversion to extend the lead to 32-6 on the hour.

Caldy then rallied and six minutes later Gavin Roberts went over and Rich Vasey converted. The Otley faithful were becoming nervous and when Stuart Cross went over and with subsequent conversion the score moved to 32-20 with ten minutes to go. Caldy tried everything in the last few minutes of the game to secure a bonus point but resolute defending by Otley kept the opposition out.

A knock on by Caldy saw referee Andrew Taylorson blow the whistle to end the game, with Otley securing their fourth 5 point win of the season.
