3. The Wnky Wanky Award

History of the Winky Wanky Award

During the 1972 season Club Captain & Chairman Pete Garrett hit on the idea of turning his old jockstrap into a "hat" and presenting it to a player of his choice, this is the story of how the first Winky Wanky award was present in his own words:

"The first recipient was Howard Moore. Howard won it for breaking away from all the opposition and us and was sprinting towards the try line when he suddenly stopped short about 10 yds from the line and looked in distress and when one of us caught up he passed them the ball and we scored and we crowded round "H" to see if he was OK.
He then confessed that as he had already scored twice in the game a 3rd would have meant him buying a jug and he had no money....a worthy winner of the Winky Wanky."
The Winky Wanky award is still given out for such indiscretions and although the original trophy was thrown away by the recipient in the 2000/01 season, Herman (this action was a nomination in itself), a new Golden Jock Strap is now given out.
The crowning of the Winky Wanky Award has also evolved with the ceremony being the finale of the Awards part of the end of season Dinner and Dance.
