On Saturday, Ransomes Sports sealed victory over Wickham Market when Danny Allen created a late winner for Franco Mallardo in the 84th minute. The defining moment arrived only two minutes after Wickham Market had equalised at 1-1. It hadn't looked likely as Ransomes aim had been awry for most of the afternoon. Ransomes did not have it all their own way as Wickham caused problems, and they will feel aggrieved that they left this match empty handed.
The visitors had made a promising start, providing a compelling answer to questions about how they would fare on their return to Senior football. Ransomes were all over the place as Wickham Market were better in every department, performing with clarity and rattling intensity, reducing the home side to flashes and moments.
Ransomes have a habit of pounding opponents early on but they could not get going. They did however, find an unexpected foothold in the 43rd minute when Wickham Market were turned over deep in their own half. Drew Connick was able to race clear of the defender and his precision cross was clipped home by Connor Morley - it was a classic combination but still needed finishing which Morley did with aplomb.
It was Wickham Market though who continued to carry the flame after the break but luckily for Ransomes, their moment of generosity did not prove costly as Allen, unmarked at the back post, somehow nodded wide of a gaping goal.
Ransomes stirred but Connor Morley could not maintain his composure as he rounded the keeper only to blaze horribly high, wide and handsome. There was a lack of edge about the Ransomes game and the visitors late goal from Allen looked to have given them a deserved share of the spoils.
Ransomes anxiety levels were raised, but only momentarily, as thankfully they have other sources of creativity these days, and it was a combination of two substitutes that brought about an immediate response. Danny Allen cleverly cushioned a deliberate header into the path of Franco Mallardo and he finished in some style with a deft lob over the despairing Crowfoot. It was a moment of brilliance which summed up the difference between two sides with differing aspirations this season.
With the minutes ticking down, Ransomes forced Wickham Market into a deep retreat and Ross Driver, on for his debut, was left to reflect on a short cameo that could have easily seen him net a hat-trick, but that crucial finish was not there - he headed over, had one cleared off the line and then had Crowfoot saving at full stretch.
Victory was rewarded to Ransomes after a far less unified and intelligent performance from the one served up against Cornard only the week previous. It was a harsh lesson for Wickham Market to learn but their desire to play on the front meant that they were never outplayed. Their endeavours went unrewarded because the more ruthless team at each end of the pitch prevailed. Phillips, on his debut in goal for Ransomes, was never really under threat and all his afternoons work was routine. The fact that Wickham would only register a single attempt on target all match was undoubtedly the reason Ransomes were able to breathe a huge sigh of relief at the final whistle.
Wickham Market are clearly in the process of regeneration. They stick together however, and battled throughout the match with Kerridge a real positive as they controlled the game with a good level of passion. For Ransomes, it was so frustrating to go from an encouraging cup win to a real hit-and-miss display but, with our forward quality, it shows we can get results.
